HAMPTON STATUE UNVEILED.
Yeateiday was a notable day for Co.
lambia and Sooth Carolina. It wa*
made memorable by the onreiling of
she statue to Wade Hamptou with Ap
propriate ceremony. Gen M. C. Butler
vrn* the orator of the occasion. Speeches
were also made by Got Heyward and
Col J. Q. Marshall. •
WHY IS THIS?
“I am much impressed,” eaid a book
«tore man to n Herald man recently, “
l>y the number of grown negro men
who bny copybooks, not for their ehil-
but for themselves to practice in.
IPl^one evidence‘of their striving to
better themselves.”
Tbe book teller might have added
that the same was tfne of illiterate
white men; but be did not because it is
not true.—Sumter Herald.
Dr James H Carlisle, president em
eritus of Wofford College and one of
the three surviving signers of the sec
«Mision ordinance, is honored, and be
loved wherever his name is known.
Little wonder then that the announce-
ment'thnt he is to receive a pension of
* 81,150 per year from the Carnegie Found
ation has canoed mnch rejoicing. This
generous act of the Carnegie board has
< Ansed rejoicing not so much on account
the financial aid itself as because of
the appreciation and recognition of a
lifelong service of this “Grand Old Man
in the cause of Christian education.—

AT LASTI
We are very giad to note that there IJ
an additional ccach for whites on the
train between Green Pond and Ehr
hardt. It was not placed on thia road a
bit too soon, for we believe the people
would not have tolerated the miserable
•
accommodations longer. They have
shown themselves a long suffering
people, as it is. We do not think wo
can claim the honor for this coach on
the strength of onr last week's editorial
utterance, because it came the same
evening the paper was issued. Still wa
have spoken often previously, and
we hope onr humble remarks were help
ful in bringing thia consammation. We
liave no apology to make, however, for
what we aaid last week, for we
promised onr conscience when we
began to wield (?) the editorial pen
that we would hit at wrong in onr
feeble way whenever and wherever it
ehowed itself, and we expect to continne
to do to.

A Visit to the Low Country.
It was our pleasure last Friday to
visit a section of Colleton count?
which is mnnreloai in its po«ibilities
and the richness of its soil. Onr
wanderings took us to the plantation
of W B Biaohoff and Brother. We
alighted from the train at Jackson-

' destination.

beautiful sections oi Colleton county.
Magnificent live oaks with festoons of
moss, scattered underneath was a
refreshing green of palms. At West
iiaak we psssed a place which had
been, in ante-bellom days a magni

tbe same side of the road we passed
plantations now oocopied by Messrs

Some Reliable Local Advice
"In conducting a large drug business
we naturally meet a great many people
at this season of the year who gaffer
from coughs, colds and bronchial trou
bles.
"As then troubles ar easily controlled
if tbe right means is taken to cure them,
we want to say to tbe people of Waiter-
boro that we goarnte* onr cod liver pre
paration, Winol, will care hanging-on
colda, stubborn coughs, bronchial and
lung troubles quicker than any % prepar-
ation we have ever sold.
‘This is because Vinol contains no
nil or grease to clog the system and
upeet tbe stomach, vet it does contain
every one of the fifty odd medicinal
curative elemnts actually taken from
fresh code’ livers, with tonic iron ad
ded. Vinol is not a patent medicine;
and yon know what yon are taking,
so without reoevation we recommend
Vinol to oure coughs, colds, bronchial
troubles, increase 'he appetite, baild n p
the rundown, tired an J debilitated, and
create strength and renewed vitnUty
for the agsd.
"If Vinol feUeto do what we aay
we will refund every dollar paid for it.
