Mr P. M. Murray, County anditor,
hat fini h d hit compilat on 0 ’ the
County returos for taxation, and has
given us the following^figaret for pub-
Mention, they speak for themselves.
Taxable property in’ Colleton County in
1903 14,4X8 675
19D5 3,660,820

Hurrah for Hooray.
Almost every mm you meet on the
itreela seems to exert himself to see
Mow gloomy he can talk* They en
deavor to create the impression that the
general condition of the country is wersc
t '- and the outlook from a financial point
sf view the darkest in many years.
There are grounds for depression, but
the country is not ruined by a long shot
and It Is not ''busted" financially by any
means. We have all experlencad and
lived thiough werse times, and better
times ate ahead of us. This Is too good
1 country to be ruined by one peor crop
year aud there is no sense in wallowing
hi a slough of despond. The Watchman
and Southron.
Our esteemed contemporary, The
Sonitneiville News, does not take kindly
to our suggestion to send over the Hey
ward Riti°men to help secure honest
flections in their triple precinct. It
sbvs such "savors too much of 1876 to
suit the viewr of onr people."
The truth of the matter is, we were
only in fan when we made such an offer
Meoanae we believe, with onr contem
porary thoroughly aroused, and with
two years in which to educate the voters
of the township, there will be no need
for "bayonets” to secure "an honest
election." Onr contemporary is mak
ing an able and tear leas fight for honesty
m county politics, and if it leceivea the

scanty affairs will be inaugurated.
Our contemporary, however, is woe
fully ignorant as to conditions in the

County of Dorchester the County tax
tor the present year is 5^ mills, while
in old Colletont it is 7 mills So on the
the who! we are pretty well satisfied.
For the enlightenment of onr oowtentr
formry we will say that the bonded la-
fiehtedneee of Colleton oonatr was
entirely liquidated in October 1908,
and this oaa be substantiated by any of

the taxpaying period for this year Colle
ton county will not own a cent and will
have from six to eight thoneand dollars
in the treasury. The county auditor
informs ns that he has milled to the
taxable property this year 8727,855, so
so that in addition to knocking off the
1 mill levy for past indebtedness Colle
ton can reduce her levy at least 1 mill
more, which for 1907 will leave the levy
for county purposes at only 4 mills! Can
Dorchester coonty ray ns mnch? Is
there not outstanding a bonded indeb
