Editor» Press and Standard: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earthy and the earth was without form and was void, and darkness was upon tbe faoe of the deep, and God said, M let their be light,” and there was light God divided the light from the darkness, Gen. 1st chapter. This we will call nntanl life. So what is fight? We ought to praise the God who gave it at even ing and at morning, for by it He hath made us to see in objects the [ Of anguish and despair, many blessings ’that ever surround' ^ thought ol hea\en with us for our use. v Within the chamber spread, Enough, this torn heart’s quivering strings, ' Enough, that thou wert dead, But when the first keen burst was o’r / thankful- But there is another light and that is the light of knowl edge, through wisdom, which is un derstanding, and I will leave it with the readers of The Press and Stand ard to gain for themselves, and I first will refer them to the book of “Proverbs,” there they will find it hcly explained, and 1 ask that they read the whole book through, for there is a promise of a gift in it, and who is able lo find it? Let all who finds it write it through The press and Standard within the next four weeks. Just to be helpful to drive sadness away. Just to tie loyal to God and right, Just to believe that God knows best, This is God’s will for you and me. Whether tbe hour is dark of bright, Please remember this to keep Give love, aud love to your life will flow, A strength in your uttermost need. Have faith, and a score of hearts will show Their faith in your word and deed, Give truth, and your gift will be paid in kind, And honor will honor meet. And a smile that is sweet will surely find A smile that is ?ust as sweet, For life is the mirror of king and slave; Tis just what we are and do, Uheu give to the world the best you have, And the best will come back to you. We all have bang away, in mem ory’s gallery some picture that is dearer to us tbkn all others, seme fond recollections that it gives us pleasure to dwell upon. With me it is the image of my dear Flossie, who has gone to be witn Jesus, and we are forever deprived of her earthly comranionship, still it gives us much pleasm-e to treasure up the train of recollections connected with her little life. Surely Tennyson waa mistaken when he said: “Sorrows crown of sorrows is remembering happier things,” for why should it make us sad to know that we have once been happy? Hope is our only stimulant. This life would be desolate indeed* if we knew that her existence would end in dreamless sleep, bat we hop? to meet her in a brighter world than this, where no farewell words are spoken, and all is love and bliss. She—was beautiful and dutiful, the light of OJr home, and we evermore shall miss her ’till the summons comes tor all. Safe in the Spirit-land* my child I would not call thee back To wander ’mid the wildering maze That bounds life’s thorn? track, Oh! conld I see thee as thou art, One look would well atone For all the yearnings oj my heart For thee, my precious one. ' How often memory tons to gase When stealing o’er thy little Lee We mm the withering blight O’er thy fair brow the crept And o’<er thy heart the ohiU ’Till all was over, thefe didst atop Beyond the reach of ill. I thought not th— of snfil wing* shadow ness, I knew that thou wert there. With many tears we stood beside Thy tiny coffin-bed And looked our last upon the smile Uhat o’er thy sweet face spread Then tenderly we laid thee down Boueath the willows shade Where, in qhe fairest place of all The little grave was made. The years bye passed, my precious one And others now may/tlaim The right to fill thy vacant place And cheer my heart again, Yet I can never give to them The love that once was thine; Oh no! the links are golden still That bind thy heart to mine. And now, while o’er my shortening way The shadows come and go 1 love to think that thou art free From every earthly woe, My chastened heart has learned to leel Our Father’s will was best That called thee early to the land Of happiness and rest.^ It may be thou art watching now While we, who longer wait, Shall tread, some day, the path that leads Up to tho golden gate; And as my rapturwl spirit stands Neath the celestial dome One of the joys of heaven will be Floss’s greeting me^ Mamma. Invitations consisting of a short note a^l a cute little sock were dis tributed throughout the community, entreating each and every one to come w ith their socks booming full. Shortly after the crowd assembled ice cream w’as announced. The young men well understanding the call, took their lady friends to the stand and all greatly enjoyed the delicious refreshments. The # committee, consisting of Misses Gertrude Carter, Rena Wolfe and Maud Padgett took great pride in making the evening pleasant and enjoyable. Some very amusing games were played, after which some of the girls furnished the crowd with some very sweet music. Then all the boys had an oppor tunity to vote a cake for any of the girls they chose, the two receiving tbe highast number of votes being Misses Reua Wolfe and Maud Pad gett, ran the second race. The cake was finally won by Miss Padgett by a majority of two votes. The people at a very late hour de parted for their respective homes, feeling that they had done a noble deed by financially promoting the cause of Christ. A. and M. Sept 12, 1906. A. Adams, of Collton County, for a new trial. It will be remembered that Adams was convicted of murder and while nnder sentence of death mode his escape- H* was recaptured and at the next term of Coart, instead of being resentenced a motion for a new trial was made, and this was granted by Judge Townsend. The State appealed on the ground that Judge Townsend had no rignt to grant a new trial on the ground of att. r dis covered evidence unless the Snpreme Court had directed or given permissu a for such a motion to be entertained. The Snpreme Court upheld the position of the State and held that Judge Townsend should not have granted the new trial, but that be simply had a right to re- seutenoe. Counsel for Adams have now asked the Court for a new trial and the Chief Justice has asked that tbe Coart meet en banc and all of the Judges of the State, except those who w*re engaged in the com, should meet here on the 2Sth of September to pass upon the merits of the pending petiton. had A*k any “JAP” that you mav see. “Why the C*ar, with Bear behind,’ to climb a tree. Editor Press and Standard: As the question of exemption of a certain portion of Colleton County from the general stock law will be decided at our next election it will be proper to have this matter properly agitated, so that our people can vote intelli gently on it. It should be disenssed by both sides of this question. We then can better understand each other. We should not be tied down to old customs of the past unless they suit present conditions. If the ex emption should gain it will be un constitutional to carry out its re quirements; almost impossible. How 1 will the fence be built and main tained? Suppose all this could be done’ is it right to make land owners sacrifice their timber to build fences so they can rent lands or plant them and to have their lands confiscated, for the public use wiihont compen sation? We should have the matter fully discussed by having mass- meetings in different sections ‘ of oar county. It is proposed to have a meeting at Cottageville October 6, 4 o’clock in the afternoon.
