WeWbSDAY AUO. 15. 1906.
In assuming charge of the mansge-
>a» m ot The Press and Standard, we are
not bumin'lfnl of the responsibiiity of
the position. „ We know the editor of
an/ paper occupies a relationship to his
readers not unlike that of a teacher to
bis papil or of a pastor to his dock. It
is his duty to glean the fields of activity
for a sheaf to offer the toiler; the
fields of sorrow for a solace to the
bereaved, of gayety for the music of
laugliter; of youth for hope and inspira
lion; of age for solace aud comfort; of
homanity for humanity.
An editor must be versatile, syrapa
the tic. optimistic. He mast be capable
.of inspiriug confidence so that he !*nay
gather the happenings of his communi
ty; he most possess the power of dis
crimination that he may rt-move and
v
present to his renders the wheat and
not the chuff. In fac*, he should be all
these things and more—which we know
wears not. But we believeonr readers
are charitnble and forgiving. We be
hove that most of them will forgive
their erring brother 'till seventy times
•even. ,
fio it is with many misgivings that we
make cun bow to the indulgent public
in the capacity of editor of The Press
and Standaid. We are going to do onr
bent to make your old friend conform
to that motto so long coupled with the
name:
“Here will The Press and Standard
the oeopie’s rights maintain,
Unawed by influence and unbribed by
Ruin.”
We desire to express our grateful
feelings to our predecessor for the kind
and indulgent manner in which he
launched forth onr new enterprise. We
hoi<e we shall be able to cmulaic bis ex
ample in fci&nmug tor tlitue lh.cg>
Which ore pure and good; in striving
for the bettering and nniifting of onr
#
citizenship in ail that pertains to mak
ing better men aud women.
A newspaper to be read and appre
ciated most be filled with what will be
of interest to those who read. In onr
field oi journalism this mu* be ob
tained from faithfn! correspondents in
©very section. The Press and Standard
bas thoa>. and to them we extend a cor--
dial invitation to oome often with your
messages of interest. Let ns know
what your people are doing. Here is
our fireside. J^et ns draw near and chat
with each other as is the privilege of
the family who congregates when the
day’s work is done. Tie old friends
will be glad to welcome new, so if you
have not done so write something for
your county paper.

We Must Close Out J\s
Many Goods as Possible To
Make Room for Important Alterations.
The headlines tell the story in a nutshell.
As you may have heard we have planned* a
thorough remodeling of this store. We are going
to make it over into the best equipped and hand
somest business establishment in town. For the
next three or tour weeks carpenters will be busy
renovating and remodeling the intire front ana
interior of store.
And we want to get the goods out of their
way just as much as we can. With a store turned
toosy-turvy, there is great danger of goods being
damaged; there 0 is in any case, great inconvenience
in moving them about from one part of the store
to another.
So, to avoid all the trouble we can, we are
going to let you have almost anything you want
►from this stock at a price that will make it pay you
well to buy it now. In this “Remodeling Sale,*'
we shall put greatly reduced prices on everything
Mens Clothing, Boys Clothing, Shoes, Hats, ‘
Underwear, Shirts and every thing else the store
contains. * *
The New Store
Just a word about the new store. The splen
did growth of our trade for the past two or three
seasons has been the direct inspiration which has
set us at work transforming the store into a hand
some, up-to-date place of business.
Both the appearance and the convenience of
the store will be vastly enhanced. The fittings
and general arrangements will be attractive in
the highest degree: while the stock will be dis-
pla\jed to much better nrlvnntage ^nd the con
venience ot shoppers will be in all ways greatly
facilitated.
