Last week Senator Tillman opened
his campaign at Sandy Flat, Greenville
Coonty, His main speech was devoted
to the whiskey question, in which he
attempted to show that the dispensary
is the test solution of that question.
, There was nothing new in the senator’s
.^poech, his main points being expressed
in the terms of the Raysor-Manning
bill, which has already been published
aud disci..-biu m vend times.
The most horrible tragedy that ever
occnrred in Colleton connty was that in
which J. W. Irnegan wiped oat hie,
whole family last Tuesday night. There
is no question about the man beipg
■crazy, but it seems to us that somebody
is to blame frr allowing this man to
rnu at large for so long a time. We are
informed that be had been trying to
burn his house and kill his wife- and
o
children for several weeks before the
awlul tes.it last Tuesday night, it
is also stated that this matter was
known to Ms neighbors. If these re
port* are true, the neighbors were very
derelict in their duty in allowing this
man to run at large.

The vagrants are still in tow n.. They
.have quit doing nothing but have gone
to robbing houses. W^tMu the tsst w'«ek
we are informed that several houses in
•f
town have been entered with the pur
pose of robbing, and it is most probable
that the robbers belong to the class who
are loafing around town with no visible
means of support. Las. week wc callml
attention to this matter, but as yet we
*iave seen no steps la!:mi to get rid of
^his worthless class. Wc hope that the
policemen and the town authorities will
•akq up thir matter at once.

We have been requested to publish
the law providing for an election on the
.-dock law ; in ‘.his county. This law will
be found in next week’s issue. Every
person interested should read the Act
carefully and should make up his mind
and vote for what he thinks is best for
the interest of the county. Conditions
have changed and are still changing in
this county. Many sections have been
built up and thiokly settled, the timber
in a great many motions have been cut
down, and it is claimed by a great
°knany people that the conaty should
have a general stock law. There are
others who do not believe that the con
ditions are ripe for snob a change. The
■ray to get at what the people warn on
tteseatgect is by a ballot. 'The election
will behsld on a day to *be designated
by the oounty •npervisor. We hope the

GIVE EVERY HAN A SQUARE DEAL
The campaign fer Colleton County
o
will begin within a lew week# and we
hope that the candidates for the senate
and the house will make this a cam
paign of education and enlightenment.
There is a great opportunity for the
patriotic educators of this county and
we hope that our candidates will im
prove this opportunity. There should
be no personalities, no mad slinging, no
acrimony; bat the campaign shook! be
pitched nnon a high plane and the issues
of the day should be discussed in a
dignified and coorteons manner. There
should be no factionalism or partisan-
sbitt, each man should be allowed to run
up' n his own merits and every man
should t$ given a square deal.
We believe that we will have such a
campaign We believe that the people
are sick and tired of factionalism and
that they will vote for the men hisst
qualified to fill the various positions
without regard to who supports him or
who doesn’t. We believe that every
-
man will run on his own merits and oot
hope to enter any office by swinging to
the coat tail of anybody else.
We also believe that onr candidates
will conduct a clean campaign, and that
the year IPOfi will witness a peaceful,
quiet, entertaining and educative cam
paign this summer.
