Openly Charged that Ha had Been
Kidnaped and Imprieoned at tha Be-
heit of tha ,, CaplUllatie ,, Class.
Denver, Colo., July 7.—It wa* learn
ed Friday algal that the Socialist par
ty of Colorado held a convention in
this city on the Fourth of July and
nominated a full state ticket beaded
by William D. Haywood, *ecretra£
trcaaurer of the Western Federation
of Miner', now in prleoo In Idaho, for
govern^. . e.-**
> is accused of being n par
ty the conspiracy which resulted
In the murder of ex-Gorernor flheun-
jnwg, of Idaho, by a dynamite
^ In nominating Haywpod, John
Martin, of Denver, saidi “
**I do not rise to bame a well*
groomed business man or .n profes
sional politician, seeking graft. Nor
do I name a labor leader who Is dined
and wined at civic federation ban
quets. But I rise to name a man
who, in executive ability Is the peer
of the best and wboee personal In
tegrity is without stain.
"A man whose hands hare been
calloused by honest labor and whose
very heart throbs in sympathy with
those who toil.' A man who baa
never been praise! by the capltallets
press as *the. (rreatest labor leader,
In the world, but who, ns a labor
leader, has never betrayed his trust
Bor sold out a strike. A man who,
because of his loyalty to the work
ing class. ha« been struck down by
brutal soldiery on the streets of city.
- “A man who. for that same loyalty,
waa Kidnaped by the command of the
powers of capitalism and contrary to
all legal forms and observants was
carried to a distant state and thrown
Into a felon’s cell, where for months
he and his faithful comrades have
waited, demanding In vain the speedy
trial guaranteed to every cltlsen by
our constitution and laws—William D.
Haywood, the prisoner In Caldwell
*11.”
, Mr. Martin d-dared that the work*
lag classes of Colorado would rally
to Haywood and that he would be
. elected. Concluding, he said:
“ "And if they refuse to release him
we may feel impelled to march’to
. Idaho and take our chief executive by
force If necessary out of the, teeth of
the dogs of capitalism and carry him
In triumph to our statehouse.”
are Indined
courage the klea that eagles a
habit of attacking large animals, but
a congest witnessed by on observer dis
pels such a theory. The battle was
between an eagle and a stag ,
'H'e bird singled out from a herd one
particular buck, which it succeeded lu
driving from the rest. It struck the
hnlmal with Its powerful wings, knock
ed It down and dually killed it A still
more remarkable epectacle is well au
thenticated. An eagle attacked a
fawn in tbe highlands of Scotland.
The cries of the llttl'- one were an
swered by its dam. which sprang npon
the eogle and struck It repeatedly with
its forefeet. Fawn, deer and eagle
rolled down a declivity, tbe blnl whs
dislodged from its bold and the fawn
rescued.
Many traditions are extant ns to tbe
carrying off of children by eagle? Tbe
most recent case bearing Hose scru
tiny is one which happened in South
Africa. A Baer farmer whose stock
had been barried by eagles lay lu am
bush for the roblnr* and saw one of
them do^-enJ and carry off the flve-
year-old child of one of the Kutlir serv
ants. He shot the bird, which, with
I the child still clutched in its grip, fell
luto a thorn bush. The Krd was dead,
but the child was little hurt.
Two'eagles v.-IU stalk a covert in
caccert. V.Tiile one conceals Itself the
other treats abaut the bushes with
great screaming, driving out its quarry
for the hidden c::::le la swoop down
upon. An even Ins*Jions uie'.hod
liOS been obscr cd. An eagle seeing a
kheep on the Mge of a precipice flew
at It screaming shrilly and with f woe
ful beat of wing hurled it into the' vol
ley below, where it could devour It at
its leisure. In the light of such rec
ords there is good reason for believing
tbe legend of the eagle dropping a tor
toise on tha bald head of .Tlschylus,
tbe Greek 'poet, and so causing bis
death.
