is hoped that no bitterness is left in the
mind of any candidate or tbe fii nd of
any candidate. The people have decVed
their choice and it is tbe dnty of every
good citizen to accept the result whether
according to his preference or not. They
• have selected those who they think will
best promote the interest of the town and
everybody should uphold their hands in
every good work. E very ben ly should
pull together for the building up of
Walterboro. We have a splendid town
here, good water, no mosquitoes and
many natural advantages which should
make Walterboro one of the largest and
most prosperous towns in the lower part
of the State. What we need most now
is co-operation on the part of tbe people,
and especially the business men. We
need water works, electric lights, better
streets, better roads and a new school
building. We have a council, we be
lieve that will favor all of these im
provement!, hot they cannot accomplish
Mt. {
a great deal without the co operation of
the people. In oor opinion, the people
have selected a good council and it is
now up to the people to support them in
their efforts to bnikl op this community.

DRAIN THE LOW LANDS.
The Agricnltoral Society of South
Carolina has issued a call for a conven
tion of the prominent people of the
coast counties to be held at the Com
mercial Clnb in Charleston June 20,
apxt. The purpose of this convention
is to consider ways and means of drain
ing the low swamp lands in the coast
counties of South Carolina. We are
glad to see so mnch interest taken in
this subject which is of such vital in
terest to the people of this section of
the SUft. There is no doubt about it,
the greatest need of this part of the
State is better drainage. If our low
lands and swamps were drained tbe
conditions in this section would he
revoiutiouized in a few years. In addi
tion to the fertile lands that wonld be
reclaimed, the greatest boon to the
people would he the improvement in
the health conditions. The moequito

CONTROL OF ENERGY.
R»e«
Is It Possible For tbe Hama
to Avert Extinction f
The only conceivable way In which
tht* human iutelligcuce can ever suc
ceed in averting the “procession of the
great year" Is not by postponing the
issue, but by reversing the process.
The question is this: While energy is
being dissipated In accordance with
tbe natural law, can we so manipulate
things as to accumulate energy, mak
ing the unavailable available—notwith
standing the fact that cosmic processes
seem to be essentially irreversible?
Now there Is assuredly no inherent
reason why we should not accomplish
this. It is true that hitherto all the
atomic evolution 'that has been ob
served Is atomic disintegration. We
may speak now, Indeed, of the analysis
of tbe elements. But so it was, we
may remember, that the older 'chem
istry- began. and yet analytic chemis
try was the precursor of synthetic
chemistry. We began by breaking up
comiKumds, but now we can make
thorn—can, indeed, make compounds
hitherto unknown In nature. Similar
ly. It is more than probable that we
shall ere long learn to achieve the
synthesis of the elements as well as
their analysis. No energy Is ever lost.
Even when the radium atom. Itself the
child of the uranium atom, breaks
down and dissipates Its energy, ending.
It is supposed, as the dull atom of lead,
the original energies are not destroyed.
Why should they not be gathered up
again and thus again become avail
able? Are matter and energy to go on
their way. ultimately destroying the
human race? For myself; I Incline to
tbe view that victory will rest at last
tylth "man's unconquerable mind.”—

that the teachers who know their buei*
ness do not have to hunt jobs but the
jobs hunt them. They do not wait
until August or September before ac
cepting p* si tions for another year. If,
therefore, our trustees wonld s^ure the
services of the best teachers, aud they
should be satisfied with no other kind,
they mast make their selection very
soon In many places teachers have al
ready been employed for another year,
bnt there is yet time to get good ones if
the trustees will act at once. The pro
gress and development of the children
for the next year depends upon the em
ployment of the right kind of teacher.
As the teacher is, so is the school Un-
fortunate indeed are the children who
fall into the hands of an incompetent,
careless, and indifferent teacher.
It means a great deal to the children
and to the school system of this county
that the best teachers be employed;
and if they are seenred, it mnst be done
at an early date. The habit iu some
'it
quarters of waiting until a few weeks
before school opens to hunt up a teacher
shocld be broken off at once.

Here is an interesting study: Make out a list
- of all the people you know, and estimate the
amount of money each one earns in a year.
Total it up. The amount will be surprisingly
large. Now, of all those people, only the few
who SAVE SOMETHING really make any
thing at all. Simply earning money isn’t mak
ing it—what slips through the earners fingers
is finally “made” by somebody else. Don’t
forget to count yourself in on the list, and if
you are not “making” money begin now to
save with us. One dollar will open your bank
