WEDNESDAY HAY 9. 1906.
POLITICAL CAMPAIGN OPENED.
WM
The poll ical campaign of 1906
•peoed last Monday when the demo
eratic boats weembled in convention at
the call of the county chairman. The
large crowd present gave abundant
evidence of the interest taken in the
•election of our officers. At the present
time the campaign gives every appear
ance of being a peaceful, quiet and har
monious one. The re are no iwues that are
likely to divide the people into hostile
camps, and the hope is freely indulged
that there will be no personalities, no
bitterness, no mod slinging. The one
aim of every patriotic citizen should
!>e to select the best men available for
every office.
The only issue that is likely to arise
Is that of the dispensarv, and that does
not seem to worry the people of this
county very much. It was thought by
some that an effort would be made to
pass resolutions condemning the dis
pensary and instructing our delegates
to the state convention, but no
such plan developed and our delegates
go to Columbia free to vote as they see
flt. * o V .
There is no good reason for any mud-
llinging in this campaign. Of course,
every candidate will push his claims
with earnestness and zeal, but there is
bo excuse to take an unfair advantage
of his opponent. Every candidate
should base his clsim for election upon
his individual merits and not npon the
demerits of the other fellow. And as
Maj. Howell well said in his address to
the county convention: "The man who
hopes to win by abuse of his competitor,
is not fit to hold any office." If a man
is not qualified in character, experience
and ability, he ought not to offer for of
fice and no amount, of villification and
abase will supply these necessary
qualifications. So we hope t^iere will
be an interesting campaign but one
noted for its cleanness, purity and good
fellowship.
OUTLOOK FOU CAN DIDATE CHOP.
<*
The ontlook for the crop of candidates
b indeed promising. In fact, Colleton's
reputation would be seriously shaken
were there to be a dearth of candidates
this year. There are always a large
number of patriotic sous who are will
ing to place themselves at the service of
their fellow-countrymen, and there is
no reason to believe that tbere will not
be the usual number this year.
SOMK ACTUAL AND PROSPECTIVE CAN
DIDATES.
Since Senator Peurifoy has annonnced
his determination not to be a candidate
for re-election to the Senate, several
prominent men have expressed their
purpoee of making the race. Among
.these are Hon, W. J. Pishburne, Mr J
S. Griffin aud Col. J. W. Hill. The cards
of Messrs Griffin and Fishborne are
published this week And they are in the
race to the finish. Col. Hill has not
fully made up his mind yet, bnt he, too,
will probably be a candidate.
.... S;
For the house of representatives, Hon.
W.C. Brant and Hon. J. M. Walker
will stand for re-election. Opposing
them they will have Hog. John B. Smith
and probably Mr John 0. Goodwin.
Messrs Brant, Walker and Smith are al
ready out. There are three places to fill
and It is likely there will be some new
material in the field later. Hon. W. R
Fox was here Moaday and when asked
If he would ran, replied in the negative
f^pmbody from St. Pauls is sure to ran.
Several prominent men in that section
* have been mentioned, among them being
Messrs 8. J. Rnxnph, M. W. Brown, 8.
G. Fits Simons, L. C. Behling, and 0. M.
. Gibson. Since writing the above we
have received a card from Treararsr D.
L. Smith announcing himself a candi
date
The race for County Treasurer will
an open ons. Mr D. L. Smith, the pop
ular aud efficient incumbent, will not
stand for re-election, ^hen seen by a
representative of The Press and Stand,
ard he stated positively that he would
not run for treasurer, bnt will be a can
didate for one of the seats in the house
of reprecentatives. He is grateful for
the handsome vote he has always re-
1 *
calved and hopes that the people Will
•end him to the legudatiuc. The candi
dates already announced frr trensnrer
are Messrs R. E. Jones aud W. 8. Mar
vin, bnt it is not known h*w many
more will enter. It Is very probable
that Mr C. W. Pellnm will be in the
rare again.
We have heard of no opposition to
Auditor Murray as yet, bnt there will
>robably be some one in the field before
the rime for filing pledges expires.
At present the race for Superintendent
of Education is between Dr H. W.
Black and Prof T. B. Caldwell. It has
been stated that Mr S. B. Sannders
would also be in the race but we have
a
no definite information to that effect.
We have beard of no opposition to
Col. Jno. D. Edwards for Probate
Judge. He will very probably succeed
himself without opposition.
There will be no election for Sheriff,
Clerk of Gourt, and Coroner this year,
the incumbents have two more years
before their terms expire.
HON DAVID 0. ROBINSON.
benefited by Vinol After All Other
Medicines Had Failed.
The Hon David O. Robin«on, County
Treasurer of Frankfort, Ky., writes:
"I was very much run down from over
work, and suffered from indigestion
aud a severe nervous trouble. The
medicines prescribed all tailed to help
me, and I could not take cod liver oil or
emulsions, as the greasy mixtures upset
my stomach. One of our county officials
id me about your deUcions cod liver
preparation, Vino!, and what it had
lone for him. I decided to try it, and
n • remarkably short time I was a well
man. Vinol built me np, cured my
stomach and nervous trouble and I have
not been so well for years."
Onr local druggist, Dr John M Klein,
savs, "Vinol cures conditions like this
iccanse it positively contains in a high-
y concentrated form all of the vitality-
making aud body-building properties
of cod liver^.oil actually taken from
resh cods’ iivers'and without a drop of
oil to upset the stomach aud retard its
work."
"We ask every run down, nervous,
debilitated, aged or weak person in
Walterboro and every person suffering
rom. stubborn colds, hanging ou
couglu, bronchitis or incipient consamp-
tion to try Vinol on our guarantee to
return yonrt money if it fails to give
satisfaction." John M Klein, druggist.

MAKE MONEY.
Here is an interesting study: Make out a list
of all the people you know, and estimate the
amount of money each one earns in a year.
’ Total it up. The amount will be surprisingly
large. Now, of all those people, only the few
who SAVE SOMETHING really make any
thing at all. Simply earning money isn’t mak-
„ tng it—what slips through the earner's fingers
' is finally “made M by somebody else. Don’t
forget to count yourself in on the list, and if
you are not ‘‘making” money begin now to
save with us. One dollar will open your bank
