We were glad to see Magistrate J. A. Ackerman in town Monday. P. B. Ackerman of Cottageville, was a welcome visitor to Walterboro Monday. Maj M. P. Howell had professional business at Green Pond last Wednesday. Bayosrd Benton, of Getsiuger, had business in our city one day last week. Peter Morris, of Charleston, is visit ing relatives in Walterboro this week. Miss Hattie Glover, after an extended stay in Charleston, retnmed home last Saturday. / « Miss Fannie Jaycocks, of Henderson ville, visited friends in Walterboro last wwk. Miss Lilly Knight returned to Walter boro yesterday, after several weeks stay in Charleston. All banks in onr town will be cloeed on May the 10th, that being Memorial Day. Mr and Mrs W. W. Bryan, of Getsin- ger, were welcomed visitors to onr city Tuesday. Messrs Gerald J. Wescoat and Dan MSodley, of our town, visited Henderson- ^ ville Sunday. Mrs E. P. Knight, proprietress of the Knight House, visited relatives in Charleston Monday. The many friends of P. M. Buckner were pleased to see him in town yester day. Mr end Mrs J. K. Graves, of Great Swamp, visited Mr and Mrs G. W. Sweat on Combahee last week. Mr and Mrs A. H. Herndon, of the Great Swamp section, visited our city Saturday on business. Josh Garvin, of Jackson boro, was a welcome visitor to Walterboro Satur day. N. H. Crosby, of Blnffton, while in town Saturday called at The Press and Standard office. J. D. Glover end J. 8. Glover, Jr., of McPhersonville, visited relatives in Whiter boro Sunday. Miss Elizabeth Esterlin, a popular young lady of Providence, 8. O., spent Saturday in town with relativee. Miss Zule Garvin, one of Colleton’s popular young ladies, was among those who visited our town last week. Mr and Mrs Jasper Robertson, of Great Swamp, were among those who visited Walterboro last Friday. Miss Hattie Herndon and Mrs E P. Herndon, of Great Swamp section, were in town last week shopping. ^ E. G. Strobel, telegraph operator at Meggetts, spent last bnnday in our city u ith his mother, Mrs. E. G. Strobel. H. A. Graham, local freight agent of Charleston of the A., C. L. R. R. Co-, had business before Judge Bryan Mon day. Col Jas D. Darlitgton, one of the most promiueut lawyers of Washington, D. O., visited his cousin, Mrs Jno. H. Peurifoy, iu Walterboro yesterday. W. W. Smoak, Jr., visited his old home near Smoaks last week. His father returned io Walterboro with him and will pay him a short visit. The many friends of Clarence A. Fra ser, a popular traveling man with head quarters in Charleston, were glad to see him in onr city this week. The streets are deserted today, nearly all the people being at the \eterfens pic nic at Ivanboe. ' . Ashby Furrow Lodge Knights of Pythias, contributed £23 to the San Francisco sufferers last light at regular meeting. The regular communication of Unity Lodge, No 55, A. J\ M. will be held on Friday night, May the 4tb. The Mas ter’s degree will be conferred upon sev eral candidates. Refreshments will be served. e J. Cumpbell Sanders, who has held an important position with the firm of Grace & Warren for some time, has ac cepted a position with Messrs Eagan & Skinner, at Bonny Hall, S. C. The Democratic county convention meets next Monday, May 2, in the coufthouse iu Walterboro. Delegates from the various Democratic clubs thorough the county are requested to attend. At a regular meeting of Ashby Far row Lodge Knights of Pythias the fol lowing delegates wete chosen to attend the Grand Lodge which meets in Snm- ter, May 22: D. B. Black, N. G. Mor- rall, P. M. Murray, Dr B, H. Padgett. Alternates, J. G. Padgett, H. W. Black, Jr., A. S. Morrell, M. P. Howell. J. W. Weacoat, formerly of Walter boro, but now of McClellenville, waa painfully cut by a saw thia week. Mr Weacoat came tot Walterboro yesterday, and will stay here until he recovers from hia wound. His many friends will be pained to learn of his accident. The Colleton County Telephone Co., some days ago completed a separate line between the stores of Colleton Mer cantile and Manufacturing Company in town and Ritters. Messrs Sanders and Lemacks now have long distance con nection at Ritters. It ia the intention of the Telephone Company to extend the line that they have at Ritter on to Green Pond at an early day. A splendid line has been constructed from |Walter- boro to Hendersonville and the people in this thrving town will have eonnec- tiou to Walterboro and throughout the country by Saturday night of this week. The line to Getsinger and throughout that section of country will be oompleetd at an early day. And it is the intentloo also in the next month or two to extend the line to Sandy Dam, Mr Henry Stokes in the Providence neighborhood,Colson’s mill, at the old burnt kiln, and other pointe up the railroad towards Smoaks and Ehrhardt. The Company now has installed about 126 phones. • ^ • — n Us ionary Matting. The Annual Conference Charleston district, of The Woman’s Foreign Mis sionary Society convened at Walterboro April 28th and 29th. The meetings were ably presided over by Mrs M. S. Pemberton, district secre tary, assisted by her oo-worker, Mrs E. 8. Herbert. The delegates in attendance, though small in number, were strong in enthu siasm and love for the work. , Among those present may be mention ed Miss Annie Maria Barnes, editor of ‘ The Little Worker,” who by her inter esting and instructive talks added mnch to the pleasure of the occasion.
