Probably most dairymen can at the end of each month estimate the cost of f ><>d ami la 1 sir for the month and In this way tell whet her they are makingor losing money. P.ut that is no reason why there si. »uld not bo a constant lookout for leaks, because one unprofitable eow in the herd had far lietter U* sold at lK*ef prices than kept in the herd to reproduce her kind and continually mluce the profits of the dairy. By the use of tin' milk scales, the milk sheet and the ilahi'oek test ilio dairyman can cull out every unprofita ble animal from the herd with but lit tle trouble and expense and at the same time determine ut the end of each month what his total profits are. The* first out shows milk scales, which will cost froyi $3 to If4, and should be suspended In a convenient place near where the milk is received from the pails. On the dial of the scales is a hand, or indicator, that can bo adjusted by a thumb screw. ThoUglt, the capacity of scab's of this kind usually ranges from thirty to sixty pounds, the face shows only ten pounds, and each pound is snUlividisl Into tenths. The indicator should bo adjustimI so that it will stand at 0 marl* when the empty pail is hanging on the scales. Where several milk palls are used it will lie no«tessary for them all to weigh the same, so as to use the same scales. This can be done by using all palls of the same size and make and by run ning a little sold'r on the liottom of each, which .can be seraped down un til they all weigh exactly the same. As the pail that contains the milk from each cow is earried to the can it should first Ire hung on the senlos. and while hanging there the weight iwhich Is the weight of Yhe milk, not Including the pailt should l>e recorded on the milk •beet, which is tacked on the wall in % ^ *■ : k?- T r.r.; yy- ■‘ A| '''' * $ A N- -f.
