Adlrondark.
The word “Adirondack” comes to ns
from the lanKU&ge of the Mohawks.
With them It was Ha-de-ron-dack and
meant wood eatera. This term was
applied lu derision to a few members
of a once powerful branch of the Al-
jronqulns, fl’hd were defeated by the
Iroquois and forced to seek refuge In 5
fastness of the mount*IP.?- Tuey weft*
in great distress, and it is said they
sent messengers to Uieir victors asking
them to make no further war upon
them, as they were reduced to the ne
cessity of eating roots and the bark of
trees. A few of them Anally escaped
to the north, and others were captured
and held In slavery by the Mohawks.

Tk. Giant of Lob.tera.
The largest lobster ever caught on
the coast of America was taken by a
Belfast (Me.) fisherman in 1891. It
weighed twenty-three pounds and
measured thirty-seven inches from the
end of its tall to the tip of the long
front claws. The monster was too
large to enter a common lobster trap,
bnt as the trap was being drawn up It
was caught In the netting and safely
landed. Many years ago a lobster
weighing twenty-two pounds was cap
tured near the same place, and the
event was considered to be of enough
importance to be given a place in Wll-
llmaon’s “History of Belfast.”
In.ect Bites.
The London Lancet remarks: “Many
people do not know how easily they
can protect themselves and their chil
dren against the bites of gnnta and
other Insects. , Weak carbolic acid
sponged in the skin and hair and In
some cases clothing wW drive away
the whole tribe. We have no doubt
that horses and cattle could be protect
ed In the same way from flies, which
sometimes nearly madden them.”
On. View of Love.
Love Is merely n madness, |md, I tell
you, deserves as well a dark house and
a whip as madmen do, and the reason
why they are not so punished and cured
Is that the lunacy is so ordinary that
the whlppcrs are <ln love too.—Shake

“Only one dozen?” asked the waiter.
“Yes, that will be eno’zgh.”
“You aft not superstitious, then,**
said the waiter with a curious smile.
“Why?”
“Because yon are not afraid of being
thirteen at table.”
