Hong Kong, March 24.—Details of
the capture and looting by Chinese pi
rates on March 22 near Canton of a
launch owned by the Standard Oil
company, were obtained Saturday.
The launch was proceeding to Kongr
mun, between Wampoa and Canton,
towing a lighter laden with kerosene
oil. While passing what la known
aa “second barrier,” in sight of the
the Wampoa fort, a number of
Junks manned by pirates, closed about
the launch and her tow. A hand gren-
ado was thrown into her engine room,
the pirates boarded the launch and her
crew were overpowered. The pirates
then beached the vessels and removed
all the valuables from them, Including
a number of winchester rifles and
6,000 rounds of ammunition. The car
go of kerosene was not touched.
The pirates, it appears, missed cap
turing much more valuable booty. It
was the intention of the Standard Oil
company's officials to ship 12,000 oa
the pller on her last trip, but the
shipment of specie waa transferred to
a freight steamer.
The American cosisular officials ars
investigating the affair.

Dead ae a Doornail.
“As dead as a doornail” at first
seems utterly senseless, but becomes
lively and picturesque when wo re
member that knockers were once unl-
| versnlly used. Beneath the knocker. In
order to prevent disfiguring the door, a
large nail or bolt was driven. An im
patient caller, waiting for the door to
be opened, would frequently use the
knocker with great force, and the ir-
responsirenees of the nail gave rise to
this expression.
