WBDNBSDAY MARCH 7. >906.
Joeeph Schultz and A. J. Kivnnaugh,
two of the pickpockets who were ar
rested at j)»e fair grounde daring the
last State Fair in Columbia, were con
victed last week and sentenced to ten
years hard work in the penitentiary .The
jury did not take mere than fifteen
minutes to reach a verdict. This con
viction and the long term which they
will serve ought to be a warning to
•thers who carry on this nefarious work.
The officers of the law are to be congrat
ulated upon their success in landing
these thieves. We hope that this will
so impress the balance of the rogues
that the people will be enabled to go to
the state fair without the fear of being
robbed of their possessions.

Our sister town, Summerville, has
recently erected a handsome new school
hnikling. We congratulate the people of
that town upon their enterprise and
hope that our own people will be in
spired to efforts along the same lino. No
one will dispute the fact that ‘Waiter-
boro is sorely ia need of a new school
Ifailding. The present one, bedsides
being old and poorly arranged, is en
tirely too small to accommodate the
children of this school district. In fact,
a part of the oltTT. M. C. A. building
has been pressed into service for the
past two years in order to accommodate
a portion of the children who can not
find room at the academy. Thus we find
one teacher with a large number of
children occupying a building in a
different part of town. It seems to ns
that this condition of affairs ought not
to exist much longer. There is no doubt
about the ability of the people of this
town to build and equip a modern
school bolding, and it is a reflection
upon the enterprise of the town to pnt
up longer with the present school facili
ties.
Hie township and county boards of
. equalization will meet in a short time
to take up the matter of assessment of
property. The members of these boards
are selected on account of their high
character, their fearlessness in the dis*
sbarge of duty, and are taken from dif
ferent portion of eaoh township on ac
count of their knowledge of local condi-
tioos in their respective communities.
The theory of the law is that they know,
er will inform themselves if they do not
know, the property and its valne in their
townships. They are appointed for the
purpose of assisting the auditor in
equalizing the property and to see that
no property escapes that is subject to
taxation.
Now the complaint has been and is
still heard that the burden of taxation is
not born equally. It is the duty of
these various boards to equalize the
assessment of property. There (hould
be no favors shown because of friend
ship, relationship or any other cause.
But the burden of taxation should bear
upon all property alike, and we hope
that onr boards will use their best
Jaigmest in this county. .•

Editor Press and Standard: What
shall I aay? No time to write, no
time to read. Oh what a rn-hing
age! Everybody on the mad rush, us
if the very existence here and here
after depended on it. Is it true? In
the straggle for bread so great? Is it
so much harder to make a living
now in this progressive age with all
the improved machinery at hand,
than it was 25 or 50 years ago? Is it
necessary to train our children for
the business world only, leaving un
developed the religious and social
elements of character? Oh what a
mistake we are making! What kind
of a harvest can we expect from such
a sowing? A harvest of graft, greed
and selfishness. I fear too many of
us who claim to be Christians re
verse the injunction of the Great
Teacher. “Seek ye first the kingdom
of God and His righteousness, and
all these things shall be added nnto
you.” -v-
Before Christmas we sent The
Press and Standard the honor roll
for the Weimer school with the
promise that if it was published we
would send it in monthly. Just af
ter that our teacher went home to
spend the holidays, and for some
reason, never returned. After several
weeks we opened school again and
have an excellent teacher in the per
son ot Miss Etta Williams, daughter
ofMqjBenS William* of Brunson.
Below find the honor roll for the first
month of her school. Cor.
One would think the Laxative Idea in a
cough syrup should have been advanced
long before it was. It seems the only
rational remedy for coughs and colds
would be to move the bowels and clean
the mucous membranes of the throat and
lungs at the same time. Kennedy's Lax
ative Hooey and Tar does this. Jt is the
Original Laxative Cough Syrfip. the best
known remedy for coughs, colds, croup
whooping cough, etc. Tastes good and
harmless. Sold by John M Klein.

, Food For Squirrels.
Most people who feed the gray squir
rels In the big porks fall to realize that
It ia no kindness to give these pretty
little animals such soft shell nuts as
almonds, peanuts and chestnuts. Hu
man beings who do not have to actual
ly forage for food naturally enough feel
that It Is thoughtfulness Itself to save
file squirrels work. The fact Is, how
ever, that a squirrel's teeth grow so
rapidly that, deprived of their normal
use, they might even through their Very
uselessness become long enough to put
this charming rodent of the trees in
danger ..of starvation. Hickory, pecan
and hasel nuts are the proper food to
throw to the squirrels.—Brooklyn Life.
