The Martha Washington entertain
ment given at Hyrne’s Hall last *Fn»
dsy evening hy the Guild of St
Judes’ was qnite an enjoyable event
and a nice little' sum was realized.
The hall was tastefully decorated to
suit the occasion and the little ladies
and gentlemen who took* part were
dressed in colonial style. They all
performed (heir parts creditably. The
program consisted of vbcal and in-
strnmental music and recitations. One
of the most interesting features of the
evening was the old time "Virginia
Reel,” danced by the little ladies
in their colonial costumes. Ice cream
and candy were served between the
different acts.

Last Thursday evening the Whist
Clnb was delightfully entertained to a
George Washington party by Miss Lil
lie Henderson. The invitation cards
vfere very appropriate, having a
minature cherry tree in hand paint
ing iu one corner, while the score
cards were in the shape of small
hatchets. The rooms were , very
tastefully and appropriately decora
ted. Conspicuous among the deco
rations was a large portrait of George
Washington.
After playing several interesting
games of Progressive Whist, all joined
in singing several patriotic airs, such
as “The Star Spangle Banner,*’ “My
Country ’Tie of Thee,” etc. Miss
Lillie Henderson played the accom
paniment on the piano.
The first ladies’ prize, a portrait of
Gen. Washington, was won by Miss
Eva Murray and the gentemen’s
prize, a minature hatchet, was won
by Dr 8 L Turner, At 11 o’clcck
dainty refreshments were served.
The out of town guests who at
tended this meeting were: Miss Mar
garet Mnrphey, of Charleston; Prof
Ek Ladson Fishburne, of Allendale;
and W. Mauldin,6f Hampton.

Death of J. W. Avant.
In loving remembrince of J W
Avant, Sr, who departed this life
Jannary 25,1906. He was a kind
and affectionate father, a loving hus

Wrong Man Arrested.
F. O. Pilcher, an operative m the
Walterboro Cotton Mills, was arrested
by Deputy Sheriff Harter last Saturday
morning. A bench warrant had been
issned in Danielsville, Ga.,.for the ar
rest of a man by the name of J. E.
Graham. ~‘F. O. Pilcher was thought to
be the man wanted by the sheritt of
Danielsville. Immediately after the
sheriff in Georgia was notified of this
man, Pilcher, being in WolterboTC the
warrant was forwarded to Sheriff
Owens. The sheriff of Daniels ville
came to Walterboro on yesterday's
train to identify the prisoner. Pilcher
was released lost night, not being the
man wanted by Danielsville’s sheriff.
