himself notwithstanding certain representations
to the contrary to serial
narratives emanating from this
island. The natives cannot and will

merely for the pleasure of his company.
During the last two or three years
a number of white men have arrived
here, believing the natives wowkl support
them. Recently there were many
wandering along the beach, destitute,
;n the hope that some passing ship
would allow them to work their way
home or to some other clime. The
average white man cannot make a livr?g
from a small patch of ground
because he is unable to endure labor
under the tropical sun. There is no
available employment on the island
"or white men and that, the economic
conditions in the island* are at a low
ebu.
Cotton Mills Fooling
Pinch of Depression
Tokio, Dec. 21.?Cotton spinning
miIb which long have been regarded
as permanently prosperous have begun
to feel the pinch of depression
with many other industrial concerns.
New mills were established and old
concerns extended their producing capacity
during the war boom and ss
a consequence they are now suffering
from over-production. The old-established
mills have substantial financial
resources to fall back upon but the
r.cw and smaller mills in which a
large amount of capital is invested
have been hard hit.
The smaller mill owners have suggested
cutting down of production by
all mills, but the proposition was not
favorably received by the larger mills
In ordinary circumstances 40 per cent
if the yarn produced is exported and
the remainder is destined for domestic
consumption, but at present, the
demand at home has greatly declined,
while export offers no promise of immediate
recovery. Higher quotation
of American cotton has added a further
condition to overcome.
The absorption of weaker mills by
stronger ones and the consequent regulation
of demand and suddIv is ndvo.

the voting of pupils of the Ochanomieu
high school, one of the best in Tokio.
These girls come from military
and official families but not one out of
a hundred graduates voted for * soldier
