MONDAY. DECEMBER 18. 1922.
The exodus of people from the
farms to the towns and cities is one
of the gravest dangers that threaten
our civilization. Most people realize
the fact that there is a veritable exodus
in the direction of the towns and
cities and away from the farms, but
.-ee no great peril in such a situation.
But the danger is there, none the less.
When the country is stripped of its
producers, and all become consumers
of products from the farms, labor will
soon find wages down to the starvation
point and living correspondingly
high. This will put labor at the mercy
of capital. At the present stage
of development such a situation wi'l
bring anarchy and disruption. Crime
will increase, lawlessness will spread
and want will be multiplied. It was
not an accident that God, having created
man, put him in a garden. It
19 not u> man s gooa mat ne travel
far from mother earth. He becomes
artificial, abnormal and degenerate
when he gets altogether out of contact
with the soil. Kven the city
dweller thrives best when he makes a
ractice of digging in the garden. It
is not the profi: in produce that brings
him the greatest return. It* is the
physical contact with the earth, the
planting and reaping, the effort to use
' ature as a helped?these are the factors
thnt count most. Revolutionists
and anarchists do not grow out in the
?-pen fields; they do not thrive upon
' ountry life. They multiply where
many are crowded into small space

wild theories take root and bring

Perhaps the present season of financial
stress is responsible for the increasing
influx of population to the
< nontprc V/ifh orvf^H rOJlds
and bettor schools and churches, with
more comforts possible on the farms,
there will come a turning back to the
soil. It is to be hoped that such
will be the case, for if it is not true,
the picture is anything but encouraging.

Is the Transportation
Outlook Improrinf?
(Manufacturers Record)
in the publication entitled American
Railroad.', issued by the Asociation
?.f Rail .vjy Executives, for October
IS. appears the following:
"Operating Projects for 1423.
"There is every reason to expect in
ll>23 a betterment of railroad operating
conditions such as will enable the
railroads to meet satisfactorily all
traffic demands that are likely to
u 1 ise.
"Certainly there is nothing now in
sight to warrant un expectation of
the peculiarly adverse conditions that
have fr.ccd the railroads in 1921 and
1922."
This statement was published in
big, bold black type. We seriously
question its accuracy or the wisdom
of its publication. It states that there
is nothing now in sight to warrant an
expectation of the peculiarly adverse
conditions that faced the railroads ir
1921 and 1922. We would, on the contvarv,
say there is nothing now ir
ight to warrant any marked improvement
in the adverse conditions
that faced the railroads in 1921 ant
1922.
Wherever one travels the unceasing
cry is for more cars. Manufacturer
cannot get their raw material exeep
after long delays, and when they havi
made the finished product they canno
ship it except under such adverse con
ditions as almost to destroy all profi
on busiess. The orders which th<
railroads have so far put in for nev
locomotives and cars will not begin t<
touch the needs of the country. De
spite all that some railroad peoph
may say to the contrary condition;
are not improving, and the railroad:
are not bettering their roadbeds an<
increasing their car supply to a suf
ficient extent to offer any hope of bet
ter conditions in 1923 than we nov
have.
However vigorously this may b<
contested by some railroad managers
we believe that every shipper of fac
lory or ugricuuurai products wn
agree with our statement in regan
i ? the- matter. Broadly stated, it maj
be said that trains are late, locomo
lives are breaking down while in op
oration, and embargoes on freight an
constantly being issued, all becausi
the physical conditions of the roa<
are unequal to the handling of thi
enormous traffic that is available. This
condition will grow steadily worse in
stead of better unless the railroad)
begin a campaign of improvements
far beyond anything of w^ich thej
have as yet given any evidf/nce whatever
as having in mind.
We are aware of the fa?t that the
railroads say they cannot find the
money needed for these extensions,
this money is found the
hdfftiujyio-nnrroatta -wi,.
and more acute, and the difficulty of
finding money will grow steadily
greater. This is not a threat against
railroads, but merely a prophecy of
what will happen. If all car and locomotive
shops in the country were
crowded to their utmost capacity, run.
ring 24 hours a day, and every steel
rail mill was worked on the same
basis, they could not supply the cars
? nd locomotives and rails that ar<
needed to meet the pressing conditions
existing on the railroads of the coun
try, which will grow more prnounces
as business increases.
Wo wish that we could agree wit)
the view that operating prospects fo
iC.O'J am Kriirhtpr t.hnn for 1921 an
1922, hut we see no justification fo
folding out such a hope based on any
thing that is now in sight.
