Turkey Comes High
"Before the war turkeys sold at
12% cens a pound?why have turkeys
been exempt from '* "rightful results
of deflation? Did Governor Harding
and the federal reserve board
overlook them?
"The season= have not been good
for turkeys, the rains have killed
many of the little ones?but one can
not help suspecting that had 25,000
farmers of South Carolina, who did
rot strive successfully against the
weevils, devoted time and solicitious
care to turkeys, the crop would have
f've to ten times larger than it is.
"The State congratulates the farmers
and their wives and daughters
who with diligence and unremitting
attention have raised turkeys and now
have them to sell at 40 cents a pound
?it hopes that they will receive even
better prices for them?but is it not
singular that so little of the energy
and indusry that were not given to
cotton production has been diverted
to turkeys ? The cotton crop is "off"
about 700,000 bales and turkeys are
among tne tew classes 01 ultimate
consumers of boll weevils.
"Possibly, and probably, more intelligence
and perseverance are required
to raise a brood of turkeys
than to raise a half bale of cotton.
Anyway, ten turkeys weighing ten
pounds each, are worth in the mar,
ket $40 and that is as much as a
, third of a bale of cotton fetches.?

Plan For Weevil Control
Recommendations for boll weevil
control adopted unanimously at the
conference of agricultural scientists
and scientific farmers, held in Columbia
November 18 on call of Governor
Wilson G. Harvey, are as follows:

by plowing under cotton and
corn stalks and by cleaning terraces,
ditch banks and other trash on the
farm.
Prepare land early and thoroughly.
Plant best seed of approved varieties.
Among the best varieties are Lightning
Express, Cleveland Big Boll. Delta
Type and (on wilt-infested land)
Dixie Triumph
Use fertilizer sufficient, such as
would make a bale of cotton per acre
in an average season without the
presence of the weevil. This will vary
on individual farms. Make side applications
of soda early, before the
first blooms appear.
Plant as soon as ground is warm.
All cotton in a given community
should be planted at about the same
time (from the first to the middle
of April).
Practice frequent shalow cultivation
'o keep up fruiting. Practice thick
specing.
Practice early square picking if
cheap labor is available. This must
be done very thoroughly every five
days if possible in order to he'effective.
Definite recommendations on poisoning
are deferred for future consideration
by his conference until after
the proposed conference at Washington
has been held to determine upon
the general policy to be recommended
for 1923.
Develop a fertile soil as the best
asset to farming under boll weevil
conditions.
Wright Funeral Held
At Tennessee Church
Memphis, Nov. 19.?With the impressive
ritualtiistic service of the
Roman Catholics church, the body of
Gen. Luke E. Wright, secretary of
war in President Roosevelt's cabinet,
for seveal years governor general.of
the Phillipes and ambassador to Japan,
was laid to rest today in Forest
Hill cemetery in the presence of hundreds
of Tennessee citizens who gathered
to honor his memory.
Flags throughout the city were at
half mast and in obedience to a general
order issued last night by Secretary
of War Weeks flags at every
army post in the country were disi
played at half staff throughout the
day.
Funeral services for the distinguished
Memphis man were held at St.
| Pet er's Catholic church, the Rev. J.
j L. Pastorelli, 0. P., officiating. He
I was assisted by a number of other
priests of the diocese. Special music
