foreigners Charged Extra
Rates by Bremen Doctors
Bremen, Nov. 13.?Americans reluiring
the services of a Bremen physician
or surgeon will hereafter be
harged a fee nine times larger than
what is ordinarily paid by the natives.
This is in accordance with a
schedule adopted by the local med.cai
association. '
Visitors from other foreign countries
also will have to pay higher
rates, in proportion to the esteem -n
which their respective ourrencies are
held by the local doctors. A1 hough ?
the dollar commonly commands tha
highest respect of foreign monies'
among Germans, United States ci.iaens
suffer less than those of a num- j
ber of other countries in the new '
ariff. Swedes will be charged 13
imes the usual fee, Swiss ten times, 1
nglish and Dutch nine* times, and
'rench and Italians six times.
New rates for natives have been
announced by the association. Ad-!
ice will be given for 120 marks dur- J .
ng the day. Together with a consultation,
this sen-ice will be rendered
in the daytime for 240 marks, and at
night for 360. An ordinary day visit
vill cost 200 marks, an urgent ca'l
400, a night visit 600, and a second
prescription or a hasty diagnosis
without investigation 100.
A young surgeon here requires i
500,000 marks capital now to provide
himself with a suitable establishment
on which to "hang out his
shingle." It costs him 200,000 marks
to buy the necessary instruments
.lore. A syringe which cost 10 ,
^arks before the war now sells for
2,300 marks. Other items range from
120 marks for a dozen surgical
needles to 40,000 for an instrument
cabinet. Installation of an apparatus
for Roentgen-ray examinations would
cost from 1,500,000 to 2,000,000
marks.

Columbia Annual Conference 1

The Columbia annual conference of *
the African Methodist Episcopal
church is still in session at Bethel 1
church here. In less than three hours 1
they took up $511412. j
Oho of the most interesting fea- (
tures of the confe-erce was Bishop j
W. D. Chappell's annua] address,
which was forceful, helpful and in- j
spiring to his ministers. In part he
said, "The African Methodist church
is the largest organization, in the *
world owned and controlled by ne- 1
gioes. Since that is true you must 1
study. You are a teacher in more
than one way. The teacher must know I
before he can teach."
This conference has outgrown it- g
self and ct the last meeting "of the
trustees this conference was divided I
?the lower part was named Central,
while the other districts remain in
the Columbia conference. .
