How Kelly Found the
Process of Pneumatic
Steel Makin
Detroit, Oct. 23.?The late 'Villia
Kelly, scientist, hailed as the disca1
erer of the pneumatic process <
steel making, has been accorded tl
honors denied him while he lived.
The honor is in the form nC
bronze tablet placed in the door <
the public library at Wyandotte,
suburg, said to be the birthplace (
the American steel industry.
Steel men from all parts of tl
country witnessed the dedicatn
ceremonies. The inscription on tl
tablet asserts the late Mr. Kelly ws
the discoverer of the process of ste
?.? making that has made the buildir
progress of the world possible.
Following the unveiling, William <
Kelly of Charleston, W. Va., a soi
told a story that up to that time ha
been a family secret.
% He declared that years ago h
father established a steel mill in Kei
tucky and began manufacture of stei
by the old charcoal method. Or
day the slaves forgot to replenish th
charcoal heneath one of the furnace
Mr. Kelly investigated and saw tin
cold ai_* was reaching the meltin
iron and making it, not colder, as h
expected to find, but hotter.
"My father developed the air pre
cess of steel making it, not coldei
as he expected to find, but hotter.
"My father developed the air pre
cess >f steel making from this discov
cry," ine speaker said.
The son of the discoverer relate
that two English workmen ;ater oh
lained from his father the story o
'he process and that later when th
elder Kelly attempted to patent hi
process discovered that the late Si
Henry Bessemer of England already
had obtained the American rights, as
serting he had discovered the systen
independently. The speaker ehargei
that later developments proved Si:
iiciii,, iinu wn one 01 tne men wn<
posed as English steel workers, ob
taininj the story of the process fron
his father.
"My tather establis u 1 his prior t?
rights but a struggle followed am
he di-'i not meet with financial sue.
cess," the son said.
The elder Mr. Kelly established the
first large pneumatic steel making
riant in the country at Wyandotte
Despite the fact that the Detroit suburb
was the birthplace of the industry
Pittsburgh later was settled as
the steel city of the country.
