I1 Prizefights Becoming
Popular in Mexicc
Mexico City, Sept. 9.?As recently
is three years ago a former heavy
weight boxing champion attempte<
' o make boxing popular in Mexic<
City and ft'led. Today the sport is
intensely popular and the bout:
which are held regularly every Fri
day night in Mexico City attrac
crowds that fill the Fronton, a hug<
structure in which the Spanish ganu
of pelota is played.
The promoters are so enthuse<
over the prospects of the fight ganu
here, that they are planning a com
bination gymnasium and arena, ant
they have already set up a schoo
for boxers in which Mexican youth:
are given free instruction in fisticuffs.
These students, in return fol
this instruction, furnish all the pre
liminaries to the main bouts and thai
they do well is attested by the fact
that the popular verdict so far has
always been that the youngsters art
better than the older principals.
Invitations have been sent to several
well-known boxers in the United
States inquiring as to terms for a
fight here, and the word has evidently
been passed around that the game is
looking up in Mexico, because during
the past few weeks there has
, been a great invasion of "ham and
! egg" fighters who are perfectly will11
ing to be mauled around for a few
rounds in return for a few regular
