THURSDAY, .JULY 2n, 1922.
As we predicted, the railway strike '
i* spreading f" additional groups. By
Saturday it is ) rohahle that there will
tie all almost complete disruption <f
t runspoi tation. That will mean preat
loss to the entire public, ami it will
tiluo inoiin n vnoeilv etiilimr of the
strike, wo believe. So long as a thing
doe* not touch it. it is oasy to view it
with complacency. When the public j
fools the pinch, you will hoar a howl,
ami it will be a roal, roaring howl. V?;o
oxpoct to see a short, sharp and do- 1
* isivo battle. .Much bloodshed will result.
Many will bo made #o suffer and
the workingman will have injured his '
cause.
No doubt railway workers ha o
i i
their grievances. so do men of all oth-l
or avocations. The men have a right
I
to demand what I hoy suppose is duo
them, and to walk out. when they art
not satisfied. But it will be a long
time before the public will be brought
to the view that the striker ha: the
right to stand over the job he hat quit
with a big stick ready to kill whoever ;
comes to take the job he has thrown
down. We have tolerated it. because
U is easy to tolerate even an injustice
that strikes at a bit; corporation
But when the farmers' sons, coming
in from the country take up the job
throw 1 down by the striker, and loses
bis life in the transaction, you will
see a very ditFereni aspect of the
whole question. And why, pray, does
the farmer's son so readily decide to
make the change from farming to
lailroading? Simple because the average
workingman on the farm has
the hardest job and the least pay of
ell. The prices paid coal miners and ,
the better class of railway workers
appears to the farmer boy a real salary.
But nobody seem.; to care what
becomes of the farm worker. Let him
strike and then turn round and attempt
to kill whoever tries to take up
bis joo and see howT|iiickly he would
be landed in jail and put upon the |
thaingang. The truth is, fear of ram- I
pant unionism has caused many to re- 1
frain from criticising the unions. '
Then, too. nobody likes the idea oi ^
refusing sympathy to the work- .
was a case in point. We are today*)
:ngman. He is entitled to n fair w:n>c I i
he is justified in undertaking to get ;
it. But he must choose just methods '
:.nd his claims must be just. It is a
well known fact that the railway
workers and the coal miners are paid '
wages higher than workingmen ofj
other occupations. In the light of
pr< en' conditions the railway worker,
as well as all other workers, will have
to take less for his labor. It would i
come to that anyway, strike or no
strike. It will come to that even '
though the strike should he success- j
1'ul and obtain what is demanded.
We feel the utmost friendliness to \
wards the worker. Hut it must he remembered
that manual workers are
i
not the only workers. Others are
carrying: heavy burdens. Business has j
had to take its loss. A man yesterday
told the writer that he find, at that ;
time, $."?0() los- than he had five years!
ago, yet had worked harder than hei
had ever done before in his life. Then,
too, there is a ready disposition to do-! s
spiso any and all things connected j
with Ko f</?on!t?l!???" " " 1 *
" .VI. I.iv rr'MU UIIIDIII. I lairt'd
towards corporations a decade ago!
i
was a care in point. We are today |
intr through a different ptiase of the!
same thine. Labor .strikes blindly at
capital, and feels some great inju ]
tices are being done by capital. The |
truth is, withojit the groat aggrega- <
tions of capital there would be noth-!<
ing for the laboring man to do. The (
corporation provides the means for (
giving employment to the worker.
All of this is written without bitterness.
It is cold, sober fact that, we j
need to face. If we refuse to face
facts before experience tenches us,
we may rest assured that we will face
facts when experience teaches us.
