S&ntuc IS
I was in Union Saturday, got there
n time to see the old Confederate parade,
and I enjoyed it. I was glad ?
to see it. I could not go in to hear
the speaking. When I look on these
Md men, who had not on the old Confederate
gray, had on the gray of
age, many also the feebleness, my
heart says, "Grand old men, every one
of you." I have read history some,
and of all of the men of history, none n
was ever more true to a cause, more ^
loyal, believed stronger they were 0
right, sacrificed more, suffered more c
than did the Confederate soldier. Next j,
in order was the old Continentals; but s,
they won and the Confederates lost. S(
I say this in all respect to all of our
other soldiers. I admire them. They j,
had a strong government to back
them, and did not have to suffer hunger
and go in rags, and sometimes
barefooted. Though many sacrificed p
life, or limb, or health; that is bad
enough. . ^
Sunday was a beautiful day; an ail- y
round pleasant day. Yet the attend- y
ance upon the Sunday schools and
church services seemed rather small. ^
We have not heard of any sickness, p
Maybe the people did not want to go. j
I was silly enough to think "church ?(
people" would like to go to church,
or Sunday s? hool once a day, espec- aj
ially when the day was good, if they
were in reach, and were well. .There!
did you see me "duck"? I felt that ^
some one wa going to strike. ?
Rev. Mr. Carter filed his appointment
at the Methodist church Sunday
morning. This is the first time.that
many have heard him, and they ex- g
press themselves as being well pleased
with him. He has had a peculiar experience
with his appointments here 1
since he came, as about every time T
rain and mud ras interfered with the ]
services, yea, prevented them.
Quite a number of people of around n
here were in Union Saturday. So a
many that acquaintances could not ^
see all of them every time. Let me o
see if I can count them?Mrs. I/. B. (

R. E. Moss. Jr., met with a compli- i
cation of accidents last week, lie had
i tooth broken with a rock while at *
work, then he got in a ball game and ']
;. ball struck him over the eye, cutting 1
a gash which had to be sewed up, and
he looks like he has been in a wreck. \
He does not complain much. "Bob" is '
game. I
Wanted?Somebody to take hold of (
a job on t^ie Union-Santuc road be- 1
tween the Crawford place and the (
colored Good Hope church and work 4
it. Washes from the center to the "
edge^of tjkgpjftad are numerous, and
many holes and blimps, and people
break eggs hauling them in a car to
Union. If the county engineer doesn't
know this road needs smoothing up, I
do. If he doesn't know it, he ought
to. It appears it is his business to
know it. If the road boss doesn't
know it, I do. Simply "dragging" is not
doing the work. If there is not
large enough a force of men to work
it, then cut down the high salary of j
the foreman, and put on more men?|
they are all about the same size anv
way. The three dollar road poll tax I
( inrht to help a lot. Of course a new l_
road is under construction, but it is a good
way oft* as yet, and while the r
road is being "patched" sew it on good I
and hard, earn the pay. It should be,
"shoot Luke or give up your gun."

Stork Puts up Fight to c

s
Riu'uluk, Samara Province, Russia, 'i
May it.?There has been no baby fain- t!
ine in the Volga Valley. Kven dur- 0
ing the six months just passed, when ^
hundreds of thousands of adults and
children havfp died, the s'tork has
made a valiant fight to keep apace
with the Reaper. Accurate statistics v
are just as lacking on the birth rate n
[is on the death rate, but an observer
in the famine districts finds on every
hand evidence that the peasant mothers
have been fruitful even when the
land was not.
The Samara district, despite the
ravages of famine among children
ast autumn, literally swarms with
nfants.
Thousands of new-born babies,
hrust upon famine-stricken comminities
by undernourished mothers
uobably have died within a few days J:
>r weeks after birth. Others are
iny living skeletons with drawn
aces like old men. But most of them
vhom the correspondent saw at the
ailway stations, in box cars riding
vilh their mothers to some more 1
ruitful region an<l elsewhere, seemed j
)lump and rosy and happy. j
An American Relief Administra- I
ion census of Samara provinc last
September showed that 44 percent of '
he inhabitants were children under c
fi years of age. While the mortality
imong children was very high last
September they have received food
'rom America and elsewhere since
hen which the adults have not and
he death rate recently has been highr
among men than among either wonen
or children.
Asked why the children lived and
he adults died, a bearded old pehsint
with clear honest eyes shining
rom his weatherd face said it was
ery simple.
"When the children cry for food we
rive it to them, even if it is the last
ire have," he said.
