Wedded to His Job
0 I recently heard a man boasting
that he had been on the same job for
1") years without any vacation. There
is something wrong with a man like
<1 that. Why should anyone take pride
in attaining a record for stupidity?
If a man has no other interest in life,
I ; -ide fiom his job, then he is so nnr!
row-gauge that he isn't of much value
i i ven on the job. When a man treats
1 is job as an endurance test and is
proud of a long no-vacation record
the bailees are that it is the only
thing he can be proud of. Moreover,
he may be trying to hide the fact that
he is afraid to take a vacation lest
his boss should lind out how little he
is needed.
As a rule, the man who has an
inflated idea of his own indispensabilitV

Stake a vacation for so long that when
he did, his absence from the office attracted
an undue amount of attention.

Your Right Hand is
Speedier Than Left
Now York, May "J.?The lingers of
your right hand are quicker and more
accurate than those of your left.
The ring linger of your left hand
shows a bur t of speed whenever it
can work with the forefinger of your
right hand; and ii .-lows down noticeably
when it must team with the middle
finger of your left hand.
Two lingers working together are
faster than one going it alone. And a
combination of two lingers on opposite
hands is faster than two fingers
on the same hand.
Practice, while it increases the
speed of all lingers, tends to increase
the rate of the slow ones more than
the fast ones, thus overcoming the
handicap of the ones that lag naturally
These facts about the workings of
your hands have been conclusively
demonstrated recently by a series of
tests conducted at the Carnegie Institute
of Technology by Esther L.
(iatewood and described in the May
issue of Popular Science Monthly.
In TtUMiii individual experiments
with adult- at the Carnegie Institute,
in which the peed of linger reactions
to visual stimuli was accurately measured,
the average reaction time was
found to be 100 sigmas, oi four-tenths
of a second.
The scientific tests of linger reactions
were made possible by development
of an elaborate electrical apparatus.
