FRIDAY, AI'Rir. 28. 1922. Our last appeal brought several farmers in to si^n the contract to plant an acre of tomatoes for the cannery, bill not yet the full number we desire. It is not too late to plant-. We will be better served if the entire nop does not (oiiH' in at once, l>ut comes in by series. Let us have your cooperation to the extent of your planting an acre, Mr. Farmer. There is yet plenty of time for you, and we need your cooperation. Somehow we have become reconciled to paying the two-cent per gallon tax on gasoline, realizing that one cent o! oach two comes back to the county for building and maintaining loads. A total of $(570,000, it is said, will probably be collected for the ten months of this year. Half goes into the State treasury and the other half goes to the counties for roads. Looks like good roads have come to stay. Don't forget that the city campaign meets in ward four tonight. The meeting Will In- held at Johnson's store, ("tinic nut and hear the speakers. The ratting of the political sea has a way of becoming calm after the storm. We have come to be used to the tip-lifter ,the bringer of all sorts of panaceas for the ills of mankind. Fact is, we have been fooled so much that we now pay little attention to these oratorical, rhetorical, cock-sure spielers. Therein lies our safety. We do not respond. And therin lies our deliverance, for, a thing like thatf having failed to accomplish results will, after a time, die. Prince on Pilgrimage To Sacred Shrine Tokio. Anril 22.?Jauan's venera tion for her great leaders of the past will be brought home to the Prince of Wales when he is taken on a pilgrimage to the sacred Tenno shrine, bordering on the ancient capital of Kyoto, burial place of Meiji Tenno. father of the present ruler and the great figure-head of the restoration period; and of Jinimu Tenno, founder of the empire. The Meiji tomb is situated at Momoyama, a wooded eminence some five miles from Kyoto, a spot which the late emperor is said to have chosen as his last resting place. The tomb itself is remarkably simple, consisting of a huge mounnd of concrete, covered with 300,000 minute slabs of white granite, and so constructed as to withstand the ravages of time and nature. The mound rests on a terraced slope, behind which, amphitheater like, is a grove of trees, the open space in front being covered with fine white sand, while round it is a double line of stone fences pierced by "torii" gates bearing the imperial insignia. This district is particularly rich in historical associations. It is the site of the famous palace of the dctator Hdeyoshi, built in 1594 but now completely destroyed. It is said to have been the most magnificent mansion ever built in Japan. Here, too, not far from the Meijj tomb is the mausoleum of the Emperor Kwammu, who, in 792, founded the imperial capital i of Kyoto, a distinction which belonged to this city until Meiji Tenno moved to Toko in modern times. The mausoleum of Jimmu Tenno is built on the low hill of Unebi overlooking the romantic land of Yamnto, where in the dim ages, was founded the empire of Japan. It is a large mound of tumulus of stone and earth, surrounded by ancient trees and a double line of moats. To both these tombs are attached shrines, simple and severe in aspect, perfect examples of Shinto architecture. That dedicated to the founder of Japan is situated at Kashiwabarn, at the foot of Mt. Unebi, while the M<>iji Shrine, in recognition of that Emperor's long connection with Tokio, has been erected in the pvser.f-day capital. Queer Situation in Matrliron'al Cii fos Honolulu, T. H., March 20.?(By Mai!). Divorctd or l.ot divorced was the problem that faced scores of worried Honolulu residents whose matrimonial bonds had been severed ostensibly by Judge John R, Desha of the domestic relations' branch of the circuit court here, until a message received from Attorney General Dougherty said that a flaw in Judge Desha's commission, which threatened to nullify his acts on the bench, was negligible and would not affect his decrees. The statute creating the office which Judge Deshea holds designated the position as "judge of the division of domestic relations." His commission from President Harding created him "fourth judge of the circuit court," the discrepancy was not discovered until some time after Judge Desha had assumed his position and | had granted scores of divorces. The e anxiety of the persons affected bv these decrees arose from the unofficial opinion of several justices of the territorial supreme court that .Judge Desha's official acts probably would he declared invalid. The anxiety was dissipated by Attorney General Dougherty's message. ? m The Chinese are developing a liking for American cosmetics. Highly perfumed toilet waters for washing the hair are being imported into China and the cheap face creams, soaps and powders of the domestic variety are giving way to the better imported products of this class.
