county this morning brought the news
that the Humphry Coker Seed com"
puny had signed the Cotton Coopera
tive Marketing contract. Mr. Humphry,
the president of the company,
lives in Mississippi, and is reputed to
be one of the largest long staple cotton
buyers in the world.
Over 3,000 bales were signed in Orangeburg
yesterday. According to a
message from there today. The wave
of enthusiasm which has been sweeping
over the state seems to have hit
that county now and reports from
there today indicated that it would
certainly go over the top.
A heavy sign up is reported from
Florence county and the flames of enthusiasm
sesm to have broken out
anew in Darlington county which is
aln ady far beyond its quota, the activity
in that county seems now to
center around Hartsville.
A tremendous signup was reported
at Laurens today, a barbecue having
been tendered the farmers of that
county by the business men of Laurens.
J. D. Coghlan, a dirt farmer
from Texas, was their principal
speaker and he is reported to have
electrified his audience.
Officials of the association said today
that they now felt assured that
the quota would be reached.
A new machine digs a ditch 12 feet
wide on top and seven feet deep, while
crawling steadily ahead like a prehistoric
monster. A revolving wheel
scoof>s out the earth and a conveyor
belt carries it 20 feet to the side to
deposit. With n crew of five men the
machine can drive a ditch, ahead a
quarter of a mile each working day.
