econd Expedition Into
Amazon River District
Ann Arbor, Mich., April 4.?A secnd
expedition into the Amazon river
istrict of South America is explorer
?he region of aestern Brazil in the
iterests of the University of Michian,
it is announced by l>r. A. G.
tuthven, director of the University
luseum.
The second expedition is being caried
on by but two white men, Jesse
Villinmson of Bluffton, Ind. and Capain
John Strom, an army otlicer staioned
in the Philippines for some
ime and who has had wide experi
nee in exploration fields.
They are obtaining specimens for
he Michigan museum and also seekng
data about animals to be found
n the Amazon country that will link
arinus species of animal life. The
k'ork will continues several months.
Another exploration party for the
fDiversity has just completed its
vork in Brazil and is on th way out
if that country, Dr. Ruthven is ad
ised.. This group was headed by Dr.
tusby and is known as the Mulford
xploration. Dr. Rusby some time
igo suffered from an infected tooth
nd because of complications was
orced to leave the party and turn
eadership over to Dr. W. M. Mann,
tssistant curator In the division of
nsects of the United States National
duseum.
The Mulford Exploration party
las made exhaustive investigations
n Western Brazil and Bolivia and is
eturning with several thousand plant
lumbers. A large amount of materiil
has been shipped to this country,
['he specimens will go to the Econ
miie Museum of the New York Boanical
Garden and to other institu
ions.
In the entomology branch 100,000
specimens have been collected, includng
125 different species of ants.
I'he fish collection also is important
Dr. Kusby's return journey is deicribed
by Dr. ltuthven as a remark ible
one because of the difficulties he
,vas obliged to overcome. Despite
lis illness he took leave of other mem ers
of the party in Bolivia and
(tailed alone on the arduous journey
icross the continent, a trip of about
1,000 miles long, by raft, launch, riv r
steamer and railroad, lie arrived
it Manaos, Brazil, January 0 and
irranged to leave for New York in
February.
In discussing the objects of the
University's various expeditions into
south America, Dr. Ruthven declared
specimens from the region are of
treat value in linking one species
vith another. Certain groups furlish
the key to other mysteries of
'volution, he pointed out, anil the
University is seeking tt) trace these
relationships.

Steps to Relieve
Cape Verde Islands
Lisbon, April 4.?The Portuguese
'overnment is taking steps to relieve
he economic distress in the Cape
Verde islands which last summer
.vere famine stricken in consequence
if the drought which had lasted for
htree years.
The Minister of the Colonies has
nstructed Filip I)ias do Carvalho, the
K-w governor of Cape Verde, to unIcrtakc
an elaborate program of hunanitarian
relief work. This will
omprise harbor construction work
it St. Vincent and improvement of
>thor ports, irrigation of the islands,
establishment of regular steamship
lines between Lisbon, ('ape Verde and
Ciuinea, and erection of a wireless
station at St. Vincent.
Credits are to be opened for the is
landers to pay for the improvements,
for a complete cleansing and disinfection
and for a thousand tons of
orn lately purchased to feed the
starving inhabitants of the archipelago.
This idea of having *3 months in
the year would seem to make one more
monthly bill day without any more
pay days.- Bristow (Okla.) Record.
