Baseball Game
It is with a groat deal of satisfaction
that the announcement of the
:oming baseball game between Furman
University of this state and Davidson
College of North Carolina is
made. This game will be played Wednesday,
April 20th, at the Union city
park. While the park is in very good
condition, the authorities of the city
have ^tated the grounds and grandstand
will be put in tip top condition.
Union is assured of seeing a good,
snappy game of baseball as the two I
teams are traditional rivals and will
do everything to* win the game. Furman.
through its two superb twirlers.
has won the state championship the
last two years and have the same
team this season with one or two of
the old men being replaced with new
and better material. The quality of
pitching is better known when one
realizes that Furman has only lost
two games in the state in the last two
years. While the exact record of
Davidson is not known, their record
has been equally imposing, and there
is no doubt that a good game is in
store for those who care for a real
good, snappy game of baseball.
Just bear in mind this is not an exhibition
game.
Method to Reduce High
Death Rate Among Infants
New York, April 4.?A demonstra
tion of the proper methods of caring
for newly-born infants in an effort t->
educe the high death rate of moth
ers and babies throughout the country
has been started by the Maternity
Center Association in a zone covering
a square mile in the upper Kast Side.
The "base of operations" chosen J
for the Association's educational
campaign, contains both tenement
houses and homes of working men in
which, it is estimated, 4,000 babies
will be born in 1022.
"The last word in complete maternity
care will be given to every
mother possible," a statement said.
"The results will be carefully analyzed
and the increased knowledge
offered to the entire country."
Miss Mable Choate, daughter of
the late celebrated h?WjVr> Joseph
Choate, who is president of the Asso
ciation declared that at least 200,000
mothers die in the United States every
year from causes incident to maternity.
One hundred thousand babies
are still born and another 100,
000 die before they are one month
old.
"In order that we may reach as'
many expectant mothers as possible
in the district where we are making
the intensive study," Miss Choate}
said, "house to house canvasses are
being made by the nurses. All of the
patients who can do so, are urged to
attend the center. Those who cannot
come through illness or for other
reasons are visited in their homes."
The task before the association, she
asserted, is to convince the mother
that care is really necessary and to
tell her just how to care for herself
and for the expected baby.
"These two problems we are attacking
through the preparation of
more than 1,000,000 pamphlets whieh
will he distributed throughout the
country," Miss Choate said.
