There was a distinct note of pessimism
at the Chamber of Commerce
Thursday evening. We do not believe
the pessimism was warranted.
At the beginning of the year the di
rectors met and agreed upon a most
drastic retrenchment. They thought
that to keep open shop for this yeai
would be a real triumph. They went

and to pay a thousand or two dollar:

week. Owing to the general slump in

rough sledding, we judge. B it the

now that we have the boll weevil
and the slump in cotton prices to
ontend with, is a great thing for
Union County. It fits into the period
of reconstruction perfectly. Scrub
hops, ten thousand of them, would not
help Union County to become adjusted
to a new order of things. Rut
pure bred stock scattered throughout
the county is a wonderful help in the
crisis that has come. And Sardis
Farm is scattering these pure bred

are other good breeds to be had. And
some few farmefs have other breeds
such as Poland China and Berkshire.
| But Sardis Farm has done more to
make farmers believe in pure bred
hogs and has actually scattered more
pure bred hogs over the county during
the few years that it has lived
than all other agencies combined had
done up to that time. The present situation
is a time when this entei prise
comes to the rescue, and one is able
to see its value. The business men
of the county would do themselves a
good turn as well as serve others if
they would give this institution financial
and moral support. It should Insupported,
for it furnishes one of the
best means yet devised to fight the I
boll weevil. It is, at this particular'
time, of inestimable value to Union
County. It was hard for us to realize
this when cotton was 40 cents and
, the boll weevil had not yet arrived.
Hog raising is one of the greatest
aids yet devised to fight boll weevil.
But it takes pure bred hogs to do the
work. Sardis Farm furnishes that
kind. You can, for a few paltry dollars

tion. It would be a good thing i;
many farmers throughout the county
would during the next few weeks go
