The relatives of the vie tims, former Premier Antonio Gran jo, Commander Carlos Maia and Vic Admiral Machado dos Santos, refuse to accept the government's offer o national honors and insisted upor burying their dead at their own ex pense. The widow of Vice Admiral Santo heard that the government had dis regarded her wishes and had lin* the streets with troops to pay hono to his body as his funeral processioi passed. In a passion of indignation and de fcpair, she threw herself before he husband's coffin and refused to allo\ it to leave the house?so long a there was one sailor or soldier lef in the streets where he would pass "Tell the Prime Minister," sh cried, "that if he does not recall th assassinated Premier, that the would not wear their uniforms unt: the guilty were punished and th Portuguese navy purged of assassin) A great number of naval and arm officers, of high standing have sent i their resignations, but the press i forbidden to refer to this. P. Black- j y well, agronomist, makes the follow- j ing brief suggestions on preparing '* land for cotton. e The best method for preparing land for cotton under boll weevil ^ conditions is to plow under the stalks 1 as soon as this year's crop is removed. This will aid materially in controlling the boll weevil, especially if H a large plow with a weed chain or " weed hook is used to turn under old stalks completely. Then plant rye, 1 or rye and vetch, as a cover crop, which should be plowed under in the spring early enough to give the ground time to settle considerably r well before cotton planting time. Un% der no circumstances is it aH?icnWn " to burn cotton stalks. Burning is an extremely bad practice because it '* destroys large quantities of orguniz matter, and organic matter is one of the best things and most needed ^ things in our soils. Just as good re^ suits will be obtained by plowing under the stalks so far as the boll weevil is concerned, and much better re-' j suits go far as building up the fertility of the land is concerned. 5. I ^ McClintock-Oood win n ^ Ora, Nov. 30.?Among the loveliest of the fall weddings was that solI emnized in the home of Mr. and Mrs. . j John LaFayette McClintock at 4 ( o'clock on the afternoon of Nov. 30, j when they gave in marriage their daughter, Alice Isabel, to Evins Abney j 7., Goodwin, of Union, d e Simplicity was the keynote of the . entire service. The hall and ceremony i y room were beautifully and artistically n decorated with Southern smilax and g white chrysanthemums. An impro vised altar ol Southern pine, which ? wag crowned on either side by white l_' pedestals adorned with white baskets e of chrysanthemums, made a dainty background for the bride and her atI tendants. a In the gift room in which Misses s LizzievCraig and Elizabeth McClin0 tock entertained, the note Tof yellow 8 was predominant. Here numerous and valuable gifts were displayed, among e them a handsome chest of silver from s> the bride's family. 8 The bride's book was presided over by Mrs. S. J. Craig, the grand-aunt of the bride, who was maid of honor in the bride's grandmother's wedding, dame of honor in the bride's mother's r wedding and just as youthful and happy upon this as upon the previous occasions. The guests were met and ushered into the ceremony room by Mesdames 1 S. H. Fleming, D. M. McClintock and ; Miss Linda Hunter. To the strains of R I the wedding march from Mendelssohn, ' which was efficiently rendered by ; Mrs. L. J. Blakely, the bridal party I entered. First came the little ribbon j j girls, Frances Louise Hunter and! Grace McClintock, who were daintily! dressed in white organdy?satin rib-1 0 bong being used for trimmings - and i 5 who carried showed bouquets of baby e chrysanthemums. Then came Rev. I. N. Kennedy, followed by the bride, e and groom. The bride was never more lovely than upon this occasion. ^ She wore a gown of white brocaded ~ satin trimmed with real lace, ropes ! of pearls and orange blooms. Her veil arranged in coronet effect with pearle " bandeau, lace and orange blossoms, ! the veil constituting the train. She carried a bouquet of bride roses and lilies of the valley in shower effect. The impressive ring ceremony was used. In the receiving line were the I bride's mother, father, brother, John H. McClintock, the groom's mother, ' Mrs. S. R. Goodwin, sister, Miss Sadie Goodwin and brother, E. Goodwin. After the ceremony an informal reception was held. The guests were invited into the dining room in which the color scheme of pink and green were carried out, by Mrs. R. C. Gray, Missfcs Nan McClintock and Belle Craig. Mesdamcs J. I Y. Bryaon and W. E. McClintock pre- j sided over the refreshments which i. consisted of ices and mints gracefully served by Mrs. Clarence Link, Misses > Janie Hunter and Rosabel Fleming. J While the guests were being served, sweet strains of music issued from the adjoining balcony and upon leaving the dining room Miss Sadie Sullivan pinned hand-painted favors upon each. As the bride slipped away to don her traveling costume of brown duve-delane with accessories to match, she threw her bouquet which was caught by Miss Janie Hunter. Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin then left by auto for Clinton where they boarded a train ifor Washington and other points of interest. The bride is the only daughter and t is widely known throughout the state, not only for her magnetic personality, but on account of her extensive family connection. She is the granddaughter of Capt.
