Wireless Outfits
Installed in Paris
Paris, Dec. 2.?Fifteen hundred j
ie small wireless outfits have been in- ,
I stalled in Paris jewelry, watch and ,
clock stores to enable the jewellers
to catch the correct Greenwich merii
dian time as it is sent daily at ten
r o'clock by the Eiffel Tower. Formerly
the exact time had to be obtained
s from the observatory by telephone,
d The installation is simplicity it^
self. The outfit, about nine inches ,
^ in diameter is hung on a nail in the ,
7 wall. A copper wire ran down to j
~ the cellar or along a water or gas (
pipe serves as a "ground wire" while ,
y the removal of the bulb from a near- ^
by electric light and the insertion of ,
t a contact plug takes the place of an- ,
II tennae. It can be done in five min
utes.
| The outfit can be regulated to
[} hear everything that is sent out front
d the Eiffel Tower. The correspond'?
ent listened in when the press mat'
ter was being sent out one day and
t the signals were clear and easily
e heard.

Peculiar Oath Taken
Douglas, Isle of Man, Dec. 2.?The
appointment of two new "deemsters,"
or members of the legislative council
of the island has just called attention
to the pecularities of the ancient oath
they take on the Bible when assuming
office. It reads:
"By this book, and by the holy contents
thereof, and by the wonderful
works that God hath miraculously
wrought in heaven above and in the
earth beneath in six days and seven
nights, I do swear that I will execute
the laws of this island justly between
our sovereign Ix>rd the King and his
subjects within this isle, and betwixt
party and party, as indifferently as
the herring backbone doth lie in the
middle of the fish."
