THURSDAY, DECEMBER J. 1921. '
We have had so much to say upon !
the question of cotton stalk destrue- |
tion that we feel almost ashamed o1
our persistence. But we are so sure
it is the way to begin for next year's
cotton crop that we cannot refrain
from again urging the matter upoi
the farmers of the county. Destroy
cotton stalks now and you will not
have so much work picking the boll
weevil next spring. (Mean up tin
hedgerows and terraces. Get ready
to raise cotton next year, not boll wee
vil.
Union should have a first class can
ncry. The establishment of such an
organization would help tremendous
ly in making the transition that must
be made under boll weevil conditions.
It will not do to put up just any sort
ol plant, wnat we neeu is a modern i
plant that would turn out a standard
grade and that would soon create ;>
gradually increasing market. There
is no one thing, small in outlay, that
would help more than a cannery conducted
upon an up-to-date basis.
One thing that farmers will havi
to learn, something they have not yet
learned, is that if they are to find a J
market for their surplus crops, they
must put their commodities into mar>
Ratable shape. If you have corn to
sell, shell it and sack it. If you havi
peas to sell, shell them and sack them.
If you would dispose of your surplus
meat, pack it. If you would dispose
of your surplus vegetables, can them
and do a good job of it. One truck
load of green vegetables will glut the
3 v - markej, in Union.
Of course destroying cotton stalks
is not the only thing the farmer must
do to raise cotton under boll weevil
conditions. But it is the one thing
that must be done right now. Destroy
stalks, plow under all litter. Do
this now. It is all you can do now.
The question of planting an early variety
and using the right kind of fert'lizer
and picking the weevils as
they come next spring is another matter,
questions that must come up later.
It is possible to raise cotton under
bolf weevil conditions; that it a fact,
for many are doing it. Union County j
farmers can, and will, do it.
