WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 10, 1921
Good roads add to the tax burden
certainly. But they save value in
wear and tear and they save value i.
time. The saving far outweighs th<
cost of the additional tax burden. 1
is a case of having to pay for a thinwhether
you buy it or do not buy it.
To do without the good roads would
cost us more than to have them.
It now seems probable that the dis
armament conference is going to function,
really. The way to disarm is to
disarm. If there should be ntft an
other battleship built in the world for
ten years and many of those now ot
nan < l>e junked or destroyed, we ma;
consider that progress in disarma
ment is being made.
Some people seem to thing that we
cannot afford to "scrap" battleships
nor to cease the building of new ones
The fact is, battleships, from now or.
will play an inconspicuous part it
wars. Bombs from airplanes will d
the job, and do it frightfully. Bombs,
poisoned gas, these thrown from ma
chines in the air will make obsolet<
the battleships, no matter how hi
they may be. Its costs $20,000 to
build a battleship. That much put.
into airplanes will oe sumcignt t-.
startle the world. We may go on perfecting:
the airplane, in fact, this w
will do, for it is coming more an<
more into commercial use. A great
army of latest airplanes, devoted tr
the pursuits of peace, can, overnight
be converted into defensive arm:
planes. The only other thing necessary
will be for chemistry and scienci
to keep pace with the times. We need
have little fear upon the question o
scrapping our battleships. The tinie>
have about scrapped them anyway.
