How Can I Make
My Farm Flock Pay?
Last month the home demonstration
agent of this county urged every person
to cull out of the flock the poor
producers. Many of our people took
this advice and will save money thh
winter in feed bills.
Now is the time to establish foi
yourselves a standard breed of chick
ens. A breed in which you will fine
a real pleasure in accomplishment o.
certain definite objectives. Too lonj
our farm flocks have been breede<
without any care and too often it i:
nothing in particular, just a mongre
dock, so mixed that we, ourselves
cannot recognize any of the origina
brood. Such a flock docs not pay, eacl
year it grows weaker.
South Carolina does not nearly pro
duce enough chickens and eggs for it:
own use. We get large supplies fron
Tennessee and North Carolina. W<
have the market, but not the produc
tion. Why not produce for markets
We purpose to make a beginning
along this line this fall. We are organizing
by communities into poultrj
associations. The members of this association
will all have one breed oi
chickms. It i? dooiroWo '
V4vw?tui/iv 1V1 C?Cl Cl!V
sooation in the county to have th<
same breed. This will standardize
production. It will make marketing
easier and more profitable. It will
open the way for a county organization
when the need demands. It is
not our purpose to go into this or
any grent or expensive scale, but wc
do expect to lay strong and firm foundations
by beginning with a few of the
best this fall and as the project pays
let it grow.
The boll weevil is with us. Whai
can we do about it? There is read\
revenue in poultry if we will but pro
duee intelligently. The poultry asso
ciation purposes to make a united effort
to do this. If you desire furthei
Information, see your county bono
demonstration agent.
Miss Atkinson, state poultry spec
ialist, expects to be in Union earl;,
in November. She and Miss Sniitl
hope to make a survey of the countj
and get the members of the differenl
communities to select one particulai
breed of poultry, dispose of niongre
flock and all invest in that strain am
organize a poultry association. Ii
would be wise to make it county wide
then they would be able to sell egg:
and day old chicks for breeding purposes.
Something must be done tc
take the place of cotton, for it cannol
be grown profitably under boll weevi
conditions. Why not give pure bret
poultry a trial, others have succeeded
why not you ?
