THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1921. >
Dr. J. W Daniel, pastor of Trinity 1
Methodist church at Sumter, wrote a
letter to The Columbia State a day
or two ago in which he sets forth his ^
determination to exclude frr-m his
church building the Sumter School
of Methods arm: unoec to "re held in
Trinity church Ccwher J J. The pro- ;
posed naeectn.c s inuer -,h?e auspices
of the Suanit .'amr.na S^tmcay School
Associattcm
Rev. Mr siyj m hu? letter:
"I alone tar* surconu* charge of the
services of 7 runty church." and
further: "No one has consulted me
relative to such a service." and that
the publication that such a service be
held "is without foundation and
gTatis."
It is evident that Trinity church, of
which Rev. Mr. Daniel has charge, (
will not be used by those who will
conduct the proposed meeting. We
believe Rev. Mr. Daniel has acted i
within his rights. The fact is that
the two Methodist conferences of the
state have openly outlined their attitude
towards the Interdenominational
Sunday School Association. The
Methodists have put themselves on
record as being unwilling to affiliate.
That should be sufficient justification
of the position of Rev, Air. Daniel. It
lb most assuredly the right of the conferences
to determine whether they
will, or will not cooperate. The highhanded
methods of the association to
co npel cooperation will but cause a
widening of the breach which has aire
.dy come.
