TUESDAY. SEPTEMBER 27. 1921.
by Clemson College, the county agents
and many others well qualified to
speak. There is going to be a very
goodly number of Union County farmerr.
who will follow the suggestion,
but will be so late in doing so that
the result will be worthless. Just today
a good friend of ours, a Union
County farmer, came to us and said:
"We simply simply cannot get our
cotton gathered by October 10, and
that is all there is to it." And so it
will seem to many. I; will be hard
to destroy the stalks so long as there
is a little unopened cotton remaining
c-n the stalk. But, as you may see,
if you will think it over, the cotton
remaining in the field after October
1st will be inferior and small in quantity,
provided you have kept up with
the picking. It will be hard to con\ince
yourself that it will pay to plow
it under while cotton is 20 cents the
pound. But you will note that the
spring crop of boll weevils is but '
per cent where the stalks are de
stroyed by October 10. and the per
rentage rapidly increases every we<4
thereafter. If you intend to plant cotton
next year it will pay you well to
destroy the old stalks early in October.
There are many skeptics
throughout the county, even now.
Tney do not believe the boll weevil has
arrived. They foolishly believe that
the boll weevil will do no serious damage
in Union County. Somebody has
told them that the Piedmont section
is immune. The people of old refused
to heed Noah's 'preaching nnri
the flood came and took them all
away. There will be some to heed
the warning, let us hope. We will
continue to publish the directions in
every issue of Tin Times, up to and
including .October 10. We are deterrfiined
to drive home the warning,
whether it be heeded or not. As has
been pointer! out before, no county has
ever yet heeded the warning until one
rear of complete disaster came. We
fondly hoped that Union County would
be the exception. If it is not the exception,
it will be no fault of ours.

The ugly case against "Fatty" Arbuckle
goes merrily on. Some there
b? who tell us that the newspapers
should not publish such trials. But
the fact remains that pitiless publicity
is the best safeguard the public
has. It will do n<> g> od to cover up
the festering sore in the body social.
Publicity purifies and publicity severely
punishes. Many a criminal has
found a way to escape the clutches
of the law, yet has found severe punishment
in the wrath of the public
brought about through publicity. And
we further venture the assertion that
many of those who have condemned
the publicity given the Rrbucklc case
have not yet read with avidity every
)ir? published.
It already begins to appear that
there will be scoffers and skeptics on

outlined in The Times. nnd outlined
