this week to visit her brother, J. S.
Carter.

family were visit ors at the home of
their parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. M.
Becknell Sunday afternoon.
Children's Day will be held at New
Hope the first Sunday in August
with dinner on the grounds. Everybody
is invited to come and bring well
filled baskets.
Also protracted meeting will start
on first Sunday, beginning the first
services on Sunday night. Rev. Mr.
Chick, of Union, will assist Mr. Blackmon
in the meeting. There will be
one service in the morning and at
night. Everybody is invited to attend.
Sorry I couldn't be with the correspondents
Saturday, but I am sure
they planned all right for the picnic.

DISPUTES KEEP
WHARVES IDLE
Fiume, July 18.?Fiume lingers in
the doldrums so far as resumption of
the once world-renowned trade of
this port is concerned, while the new
state oi Jugoslavia is pressing forward
in an effort to take the trade
with America that Fiume held before
the war.
Political quarrels in this city and
international disputes keep the
wharves of Fiume idle but in Jugoslavia
a company has been formed to
establish a line of steamers to operate
from Spalato, Ragusa and Cat|
taro to New York.
Already small steamers are being
operated along the whole Dalmatian
coast under the Jugoslav flag but
they do not touch at Fiume, formerly
the chief port for this trade.
The Italian suggestion of a consortium
for the management and amalgamation
of the port of Fiume and
the port of Baross, has been enacted
by the Jugoslavs, who claim complete
sovereignty over the port of
Baross and with it the town of Sussak,
all of which, they contend, is in
keeping with the treaty of Rapallo.
An Italian naval commander. Captain
Foschini, has been designed by
the Italian government to take
charge of the city of Fiume in an effort
to adjust the differences between
the contending groups inside the
town.

Miss Annie Greer, Walter Greer,
Daisy and this writer attended the
funeral and burial at Pacolet Sunday
morning of Mrs. Sallie Greer.
Mr. J. L. Eison and family and
Harry Barnett and son, Eldridge,
'motored to Spartanburg Sunday to
see Mrs. J. L. Eison who is still in
Steedley's hospital, and found her
improving rapidly.
Cracker Jack and sister, Miss Annie
Greer,-spent a few pleasant hours
with this writer Saturday.
Our picnic will soon be here and
won't we all be happy, for I believe
that Moxy will give us a big time.
I was sorry that I could not attend
the call meeting Saturday morning,
but I heard afterwards when you
were going to have it.
Moxy, you spoke in one of your letters
about a boy picking up a snake
and it frightened him. Of course it
did, but I can beat that. Anderson
Harris, who ' lives ne*.r Hose
mont cemetery, was walking out
in Greer's pines near his home and
killed (forty) 40 coachwhip snakes
last week. I suppose he found a den
of them.
