rfiUNO SITUATION :
> REMAINS CRITICAL i
Warsaw, August 5.?Owing to the t
desperate situation on the front near- *
est Warsaw, the Kosciuszko squad- c
ron, the air force composed for the t
most part of Americans attached to c
the Polish army, is beinv transferred *
from the southern front. The squad- >
ron will aid in the defense of the *
. Polish capital. t
The American Consulate in War- t
saw will be closed Friday and Consul 1
Rankin is makiag preparations to de- >
part Friday night. Most of the rec- *
ords already have been shipped away. *
The American legation here also is
prepared to close within a few days. >
The legation employees have shipped
their baggage to Camp Grappe, the
emergency headquarters of the
American typhus expedition.
The defensive line east of Warsaw t

nus uwn pierceu in several places, ac- I
cording to reports from the front, i
Preparation have been begun for (
transferring the government, if that i
move is necessitated by the Russian I
adfance. The officials, however, still (
hope the Soviet forces will be check- t
ed somewhere east of th Vistula.
No announcement has been made t
as to what place the governmnt s
would move to, but it is reported it \
would be Posen or Czestochowa, 143 t
miles southwest of Warsaw near the i
Silesiona frontier.
Of the developments along the I
eastern defense line, the word from
the front allows that after a halt of
several days while reinforcements
wer? frrrmht nn and supplies forwarded
along the river, the Botsheviki a
forced crossings of the Bug at a num- J
ber of places. At one point southeast t
of Ostrov, the Soviet troops are re- (
fiorted to have crossed the river in .1
arge numbers. 1
Tonights communique from head- I
quarters announced that the Russians J
had force the Bug in the region of r
Drohiezyn (about 70 miles east of the 1
capital), this being a part of the Soviet
movement to outflank the defend- I
era of Warsaw and push on toward a
the Vistula. The Poles counterat- t
tacked and fierce fighting is continu- 1
ing. c
Between Drohiezyn and Brest-Lit- i
ovsk, the communique continues the i
Poles launched a counter-attack i
against the Russians wro had crossed r
the Bug below Brest-Litovsk. In the a
region of Brest-Litovsk, which is in
the hands of the Russians, they re- c
coRed for an attack which compelled I
the Poles to evacuate Terespol, just c
to the west of the river. s
There was fighting at various f
points to the south, but without gains J
for the Russions. I
The Soviet troops have been check- ?
ed in their westward push along the t
Prussian border, the statement an- 1
nounces. They have reached Myszc- t
niec in an advance apparently diegned f
to bring them to the Warsaw-Daniz i
railway. Military observes assert
that this is part of the Russias outflanking
movement, planned to encircle
the capital, thus saving the heavy
losses which would result if Warsaw
were attacked directly. c
Russian gains are conceeded north s
and east of Warsaw, where the Soviet i
forces are regrouping for what may t
be the final exertion in their attempt c
to bring Poland to their terms of 1
peace by directly thrateneing his
capital.
In the center of the front bearing
down upon Warsaw from the northeast
the Russians, according to the
communique are being held along the s
Ostrov-Czerwony line to the Bug.
London, August 6.?While the ac- ?
tual military situation in Poland is s
not much clearer than it was yester- f
day, it is admitted to be critical. Reports,
however, are in some respects
contradictory that the precise degree 1
of menace to Warsaw as a result of i
the recent Bolsheviki advance cannot ?
be estimated.
; Reports yesterday stated the So- 1
viet armies had renched points thirty
miles distant from the Polish capital,
but later advices indicate they are
twice that distance away and that the
Soviet calvary is far ahead of the ,
infantry. A Warsaw dispatch to the
Daily Mail states the Polish counter .
offensive on the southern front has
been successful at the Bolsheviki have 1
been hurled back 45 miles. Most '
newspapers express great anxiety 1
over the situation this morning and I
the statement by a high official yes- i
terday that the present position is as
grave as that in August, 1914, is
given great prominence. Reports that
the British government has already
ordered the fleet to resume the blockade
of Russia, which was partially
raised last November receive great
emDhasis in some ioumels. hut nn of
ficial sanction is claimed for the
statement, and such inquiries as were
possible early this morning tended to
discount the rumor. It is asserted
that, notwithstanding the fact that
the cabinet has not yet considered
the reply of the Soviet government
relative to an armistic with Poland,
it has been determined to send the
Kameneff-Krassin trade delgation
back to Russia.
The text of the Soviet reply is
known to have reached London, but
aH yet it has not been made public by
the Foreign office. All of this morning's
newspapers, however, print
versions of it which coincide for the
most part, and show the reply was
worded moderately operations against
Poland.
Wililngness to sign an armistice
1(0 agreerhent when Polish delegates arrive
at Minsk is said to have been
expressed, and the Soviet government
it is asserted has declared its readiness
to grant Poland complete independence.
Moscow, however, has insisted
upon aranging the terms of
peace by direct negotiations between
Poland and Russia, and participation
by elements led by General Wrangel
as the Russian border states has been
ik refused. The reply is also said to
contain a statement that the terms
Russia will present to Poland are
already in the hands of M. Kameneff
and M. Krassin, heads of the Bol
heviki trade commission now is
L?ondon.
These terms, according to some reports,
include the condition) that
romplete protection shall be secured
'or all Jews and that, free passage
icross Poland shall be allowed for
roods exchanged between Germany
ind Russia. Moderate newspaper
>pinion reflects the impression that
he tone of the reply i3 reasonable
ind cannot be objectionable in offiial
quarters. It is said the situaion
will be favorable alfected by the
:ommunications. That Germany is
icting in conclusion with the Bolsheriki
and that it is not lessened by
eports that were made by Dr. Waler
Simons, German Foreign Minister
before the Reichstag yesterday,
luring which he declared Germany
vould 3eck to pvvent the entente
rom sending troops to Poland across
Germany.

Make Washday a
Holiday
Women Can Forget "Blue
Monday'*
Did you over believe that an average
week's washing couhl bo dope in ton
minutes without rubbing ami scrubbing?
Just think what that moans.
Fly ten o'clock Monday morning all
the wash Is out on the line. Huffy,
white and clean I And you have the
whole day to enjoy yourself, instead
of backaches, tired lingers and faggedout
body.
That's what the easy Clean Kasy
method of washing does. And more?
it not only does all the work, cleans
perfectly, but it sterilizes and disinfects
as well.
How? Tlie simplest and easiest way
you ever saw. Soak your wash over
night. Cut up ^2 bar of Clean Easy
Into 4 gallons of water. Hoil. let it
dissolve, and put In the clothes. Stir
with a stick for ten mhiutes. Rinse,
blue and dry. The whole job is finished
and you haven't even rubbed,
shrubbed or done anything distasteful.
Isn't that a wonderfully easy way
to wash? And it's far better than
the old-fashioned way, anyhow. Clean
Kasy neither eats up nor frays the
fiber of delicate work, nor frets the
fingers of the woman. Its action is
upon dirt, grime and germs. It loosens
them up, dissolves thein, absorbs
them in water and leaves your clothes
sweet, clean and wholesome.
Garments last much longer because
you don't wear them out on a scrubbing
board. You get 100 per cent,
value out of a few cents worth of
Clean Easy Naptholeino Wash Soap
in clothes saved, time saved and
trouble avoided. Try it and prove It
and you'll like it. Notice how different
Clean Easy looks from other
soaps. Ask your grocer. Follow
directions on Inside of wrapper.
