VILLA'S SURRENDER

Washington, August 2.?The surrender
of Francisco Villa, to the representatives
of the de la Huerta is complete,
according to reports said to be
authentic, forwarded to the state department
today by the American consul
at Piedras Negras, just across the
border from Eagle Pass, Texas.
The consul stated that Villa, according
to these reports, would be given
command of rurales in the state of
Chihuahua, that he would retain 206
men who had been in his army would

body of Frank Hanley, former Governor

of the Priests Eucharistic
League, a society of Catholic Clergy,

The clergymen are from all the

TO INVESTIGATE
Chicago, August 2.?Judge Robertt
E. Crowe, chief justice of the criminal
court, directed the August grand
jury today to investigate the coal
famine which theatens Chicago and
determine whetheivor not any persons,
firms or corporations in Cook county
are engaged in a criminal conspiracy
to bring about a coal shortage for
the purpose of manipulating the
price.

Kansas City, Kan., August 3.?
Kansas today nominated candidates
for state offices, for the United States
Senate, for Representatives in Congress
and for District, County and
Township offices, and chose ten presidential
electors for each party.
An insurance company for old maids
is an institution in Denmark. A
member pays a small weekly premium
front the age of 20 to 40, and after
that, if unmarried, she receives an
annuity for life.
Michigan is the leading state in the
manufacture of sand lime brick, followed
by Minnesota and New York.
A windmill grinds grain into flour
and then mixes and kneads it into
dough for a baker in a European
country.
INCREASED FARES
EFFECTIVE AUG. 30
Washington, August 3.?With a
view to making the increased passenger
fares effective August 20 and the
advanced freight rates applicable
August 25, railroad experts were hard
at work today preparing blanket rate
schedules.
Railroad executives indicated today
that all possible would be done to
make the new rates authorized by the
Interstate Commerce Commission effective
before the first of next month,
when the government guarantee of a
specific income expires.
Increased charges for Pullman
travel and for excess baggage and on
milk shipments, under the present plan
of the carriers, v/ill become effective
August 20 along with the new passenger
fares.

Among conferences scheduled for

Phillip Giordano, Italian newspaper
publisher of - ew York.
Senator New was accompanied by
Mrs. New and they had breakfast with
the candidate at his home.

Telephone service throughout the
island stopped at 9 o'clock this morning
when operators and other employes
walked out after a rejection of
their demands for a 50 per cent increase
in wages. An offer of a 30 per
cent advance was refused by the strikers.
Brazil has a total area of 8,290,431
square miles, and so> is 263,625 square
miles larger than the United States
of America, exclusive of Alaska. The
population is considerably more than
25,000,000.
