QHbe ?Samferg^era& ESTABLISHED APRIL, 1891. Published Weekly at Bamberg, S. C. Entered as second-class matter April 1891, under Act of March 3, 1879. $2.00 PER YEAR. Volume 31. Number 24. Thursday, June 15, 1922. According to Washington correspondents, the Harding administration in Washington is shaking in its shoes for the next election. The administration Republican candidates are being defeated throughout tne north and west, and a Democratic national victory is being freely pre \ dieted two years hence. The newly elected Walterboro city council got a bad start. The first thing the new council did after being sworn in was to resolve itself into an executive session, clearing out all spectators, and then electing the (highest salaried men applying for town offices. Executive sessions are "bad business for city councils anywhere, and especially in a small town. Here is something new under the Bun. According to the Barnwell Sentinel a "weiner roast" was held in the woods near Barnwell last week by the young folks. A fire was built and the young people gathered around the fire and roasted weiner n sausages, after which games were ? played, and a good time had by all. Pindar boilings, candy pullings, sugar boilings, and catfish stews are typical southern Carolina enterprises? and mighty fine occasions too?and now we cheerfully add "weiner roastings." *v .- < m ?mu m \ Strange things come to pass; says the Columbia State, as is evidenced by an uterance recently or uovernor Miller, of New York state, wbo is quoted as follows: "The federal goveral government was threatened 60 years ago; the states are threatened today; and it may seen strange to hear on a platform in the north, the advocacy of state's rights." The matter of states' rights is being agitated far more in the north today than in the south. Some day it will become universally known that the south was right in the matter of the rights of spates. Methods employed by alleged members of the Ku Klux Klair may not be ?5?1 Vl.? + r\ ncfl tne most auvi?a,uie U1CCUV/UO bV MWV) J but in a majority of cases we have noticed these methods have been very 'effective. Many of the deeds attributed to the klan are denounced * for klan leaders who say they are % perpetrated by imposters using the disguise of klan members, and this Is probably true. In some of the recent instances of activity by hooded persons the action-was probably the best thing to be done. We know nothing of the justness of the Anderson affairs of the past week, but reading between the lines one would gather the idea that something of the sort was an excellent manner in which to dispose of certain conditions.' ~ * * ? ^ t\?A complained or ana we uucr mc i?cdiction that these conditions will not likely he repeated. The high cost of county politics is a matter that is worrying the authorities of the Democratic party in South Carolina. As the matter now stands an almost prohibitive assessment must be made against candidates for small county offices. We regret that we have no solution to offer, but we do know that the assessments are tending to deter many from entering the race for county offices. No blame whatever can be attached to the county executive committees; they are doing the very best they can, and in fixing the assess orients realize fully the consequences likely to result. The expenses of the primary elections should be borne, we . think, by the Democrats of the state at large, but if there is any way of attaining this end we cannot think of it. It is unthinkable that the state government should bear the expense of the holding of primaries by any faction or party. This matter sfhould command the earnest thought of party leaders and some solution worked out that will enable any person to enter the primary elections without the necessity of having to pay out such large sums of money for the privilege of running.^ 'X " August Kohn's idea of a painless extraction system of collecting state taxes is employed privately by some of the concerns that but up southern sohool bond issues; except that instead of being taxes thus collected it is an enormous fee for printing the bonds. The idea is about as follows: These concerns keep tab on school bond elections throughout the south, and as soon as an election is held the school district authorities are communicated with and a proposition is made to buy the bonds. The matter of having the bonds printed usually perplexes the district authorities on account of the intricacy of the I 4 work; but the buying concern comes j ^ to the rescue and proposes to "pay == all expenses" including the furnishing of the bonds. The Dillon Herald recently investigated an instance in j North Carolina, and it was found that j To the fee included in the bid for print- j De ing the bonds amounted to from jsu] $500 to $600, whereas The Bamberg i Herald, the Dillon Herald, or any one of several other printing offices in j me this state, would have been glad to {lrc furnish the bonds for around $75, or! J1? perhaps less. The Herald offers this I suggestion with the idea that son\e j To school districts in this county may!re? r\-n t'Ar ! Set V e SU1I1C IUUUC,? . <? UCU CiO I\ HI;-, 1UJ I bids for the purchase of bonds, request that a bid be submitted for the die bonds printed by the trustees or oth- sul ers ip authority and another bid for the bonds to be furnished by the prj buyer. Check the two bids, com- ? municate with The Bamberg Herald, you may find that you can save several hundred hard earned dollars. The average set of bonds is worth gu only from $40 to $100 for printing, De depending on number of bonds and t0 number of coupons attached. It SUI might be stated, also, that the bonds ? furnished by The Bamberg Herald are identically the same as furnished in Atlanta or any northern city. ^ ' dai Guided by the Union. sio Da sel Two musicians sat in a concert ball 0CI listening to a famous orchestra.
