- W$t ?Samfcerg ^eraib ESTABLISHED APRIL, 1891. Published Weekly at Bamberg, S. C. Entered as second-class matter April ' 1891, under Act of March 3, 1879. $2.00 PER YEAR. Volume 31. No. 8. Thursday, February 23,1922 "Sunny Ireland" does not seem to be correctly descriptive any more. Bloody Ireland seems to be more correct. It was thought by many that with the compact duly executed beeween England and Ireland recently, the Irish question was at least temporarily settled. But not so. Now Ulster is up in arms, and Ulster and Ireland appear to be about as danfej * ' gerous foes as ever Ireland and England were. j The country is mreateiieu wuu another huge strike situation. The coal mine operators are demanding shorter working days and less days per week. There seems to be a de? termined effort among the miners to force their demands, even in spite of the efforts to the contrary of the union leaders. The operators are demanding a. working day of six hours, and five days per week. It adorns that the time of an honest day's labor has long since passed; the general tendency is less work and more money. ' 101 m The recent shipment of a number of carloads of hogs from this county has demonstrated the fact that in ewine raising there is a fine market for corn and peanuts. Corn grown in this section cannot be shipped profitably. Our climate is not such as to produce good corn for commer/*iai ehi.nmont Rut hnsrs ean eat the ViUA OJUX^/uivuv* ??-% ? **^0- ?? corn, and hogs can be sold profitably. Peanuts can profitably Jbe fed to hogs with more profit than by selling f;. ~ them. Considerable money has been put in circulation ih tbis county recently through the marketing cooperatively of hogs and cattle. This appears to be one certain industry In this section; for, when it comes to hig and cattle raising, there is no - section better adapted than Bamberg Jfe county. Cooperative marketing is, to our * mind, the salvation of the farmer. There are now movements on foot all over the south to have the farmers to sign up their crops for marketing in this manner, and we do not think any farmer could possibly lose anything by joining the movement. It has been demonstrated time and time again that there is usually a market for all farm produce; the proposition is to get the consumer and producer together at the right time. Just now, when the south is face to face with the boll weevil, is tfhe time to get this movement under way. The south can grow unlimited quantities of profitable produce, but the question is to dispose of the * ' I crops after they are made. We can imagine of no other method whereby. the fanner can ever hope to have' any voice in the price of his goods. For time past rememberance the producer hauls his produce to mar* ket and takes what is offered him.! c5& \ m He >has absolutely no voice in price fixing. This applies to cotton, tobacco, and all other crops. Thej ' I producer should receive the value of his crops, but one farmer would have a rather difficult job to tell his purchaser bis crop is- worth so much; ten thousand .farmers, however, can| say this most effectively. This is the idea , of cooperative selling. The world must have the south's cotton crop, but tfhe trouble is the world wants the crop at its own price, witnont regard for the cost of production. If half of the crop is sold through the marketing organization, it is safe to say there will be a revolution in the price of cotton. The same thing is true of all other products. OLD OOWS MADE YOUNG. Sow Serum Changes Grandmas to 'mappers. ?y Harrisburg,' Pa., Feb. 15.?The principle employed in monkey glands for rejuvenation has been used with success in experiments on cows, it was announced today by officials of * the state bureau of animal industry. . Eleven dairv cows which had become tlx " grandmothers many times were made young and frisky by a serum extracted from glands of sows, the statement said. The old cows were given the serum in capsules, and not only did they fail to develop any traits of . pigs, but were reported by observers to have become useful again. . Complete reports on |fie experiment have been sent to Secretary of Agriculture Rasmussen from the department's laboratory at Philadelphia. Don't fail to see "Camille" at the) Thielen Theatre Friday and Saturday of this week.?adv. The interior of Hong Kong island is a barren place. STUDENTS NOT INTERESTED. Heroes of Diamond Are Not so Well Known. Supposedly national heroes of the diamond, the gridiron and the silver sheet do not stand so high as might be supposed with the high school and college students. This was learned when the Institute for Public service of New York made public some results of a national current historj test taken by more than 200,000 puDils. Twenty thousand of the students averaged only forty-six per cent, on ten questions about baseball, football and the movies. Of 500 seniors, more of them knew about de Valera, Lloyd George, Briand and General Leonard Wood than about which team won the wrorld's series or what shining light of the screen is starred in a current popular picture. A majority of 500 girls knew more about Sinn Fein than about Mile. Legulen and Ruth Law. Some of them thought Mile. Lenglen was a French chemist and some others identified her as Japan s representative of the armament conference. As for Christy Matthewson, his picj ture elicited the answer that he was the man who sold out the world series in 1920. Thirty-five per cent, of the boys did ^not know who won the last world's series; 50 per cent, did not know Babe Ri . s home nun record and seventy p*.i cent, of the girls did not know the name of the only woman member of congress. Three hundred high school seniors could not identify Pershing, and four out of the same hundred did not rect ognize a picture of President Harding. Father's Change. Willie (to this father who had recently married the second time)? "There's a shop in the High Street just like you, daddie." Father?"Shop like me? What do you, mean?" Willie (getting near to the door)? "Why, it's under entirely new man* agement."?Edinburg Scotsman. NOTICE TO DEBTORS AND CREDITORS. / All persons having claims against thfe estate of Mrs. M. A.
