a salary of $2,900 per year.
H While making an arrest recently,
Sheriff J. H. Fant, of Union, resorted
HR to the butt of his pistol in an effort to
Hi subdue his prisoner. The pistol was
Bb discharged in the act, and the bullet
HES entered the sheriff's abdomen, inflicting
a wound from which he died a

Friday. The concern carried a stock

The hunger strike has struck South
Carolina. Mrs. Effie Hudgins, in the
York jail for complicity in the killing
of her husband, J. Pink Hudgins,
I the last heard from had refused to
touch a morsel of food for three days.
Albert Zimmerman is alleged to have
done the killing, and 'Mrs. Hudgins is
charged with being accessory.
Arrangements have been made to
reopen the Enterprise Bank, of Charleston,
*wihich recently closed its
doors, on the condition that deposi
I tors may not expect to withdraw any
I funds deposited within a year. It is
| said that many of the customers of
the bank have agreed to the arrange*
ment, and that the bank will be open
in a few days.
The body of a dead negro infant,
was found in an Orangeburg well
| recently, according to the Times and
Democrat. The body was badly decomposed,

Killing for sport is meeting with

been an ally of the farmers in the
fight against the boll weevil, and it
is being agitated that the birds should
not be killed for sport, and it is
I- pointed out tnat many persons, guou
shots, will kill hundreds of the birds
in a day's hunt purely because it is
: good sport.
A vest button and a bit of cloth
found beside the dead body of J. Pink
Hudgins in York county led to the
arrest of Albert Zimmerman for the

Bomb Found on Steps.
Lawrence, Mass., Nov. 17.?A
small bomb, the lighted fuse of which
had been extinguished by the rain
was found tonight on the steps of
Hie Siait; armuij, micic a, laigc
conclave of Masons were celebrating
commencement of work on a newtemple.
The bomb was four inches long.
Police and fire department officials
who analyzed it said it contained a
high explosive. It was discovered by
one of the Masons who was leaving
the armory.
No clue as to its origin had been
obtained late tonight.
