According to the crop reports, the
country has made the largest food
crops this year on record. Corn, potatoes,
wheat, and all the way down
the line' of the lesser crops, great
yields are reported throughout the
country. With such a magnilicent
harvest, there is very little danger of
anybody coming to want, although
Smith Carolina farmers, apparently
are going to be pre|ty shy of cash for
the next few months. And this, of
course, means that everybody else is
going to be shy of cash.
The Herald forgot last week to extend
its usifhl invitation to the little
folks to send in their letters to Santa
Claus. Old Santa may not be as pros- ,
perous as last Christmas, but we
suspect the old fellow is not going to
forget his little boys and girls entirely
this Christmas. So, take your
pencil or pen in hand and write Santa
Claus your usual letter. Send it
to The Herald, and we will publish
it next week, or the week following.
We should like to have a big bunch
of Santa Claus letters next week. To
he published next week, though, you
should mail to The Herald some timer
this week.
There are a good many people who
entertain the idea that President Wilson
has been partial to the Catholics.
This may be correct; we do not know.
But it appears to be a fact that the
president is quite unpopular with the
Sinn Feiners, the Irish Catholic party,
who have staged demonstrations
against the president, which would
appear to indicate that President Wilson
has not been pleasing to the Catholics
in regard to Ireland. In perhaps
the same manner, the Democratic
party has been accused of being the
Catholic party in American politics,
whereas not a single state in the unw;tv.

All of which indicates that you can't
believe all you hear , about politics, especially
in presidential election year.

about as much of a condition of the ;
mind as of the pocketbook. People
ride around just as much. If there's
any less gasoline used we have not i
noticed the effect. They wear just as
fine clothes, and there seems to be
plenty to eat. What more is wanted?
Xot so much money to throw away,
assuredly, and there are some who
are inclined to believe that that is
not so bad for the average person,
anyway. For those who entered into
the spirit of the various war restrictions,
they are living better now than
they did then.
Funny, isn't it? You take up your
paper and read where the price of
hogs has declined to the 1913 quotations,
yet when you go to buy a
little piece of meat for dinner, you
get the same small portion you have
been getting for the past three years.
When is this reduction in price ever ;
going to reach the ultimate consumer?
Likewise, we are told by the 1
packers that beef is going down by :
leaps and bounds, yet your dollar :
buys the same little piece that you !
used to get for about a quarter?so 1
small you can hardly discover the i
gravy when it's cooked. The u. c. <
seems to never share in the reductions.

"You ought to move your paper to, 1
Denmark," remarked a Denmark cit-j 1
izen the other day, when we related! g
to him the difficulties of the electric;
power situation in Bamberg. "We
will give you current 24 hours in the i
day, and 365 days in the year." And
we sighed, yes, sighed. We could i1

current?even eight hours. We can't
be blamed for wishing Denmark was
in Bamberg just now. The power situation
here is just about as bad as it
could very well be. We don't blame
anybody. But the fact remains that
it is fierce, to put it in good clear
English. Monday the current was so
weak, that by the most exasperating
method in the world we managed to
get three columns of reading matter
set up for The Herald before night.
We have set twelve columns in the
eanie time. This concerns the day
current. The night current is just
as bad, and unless some steps are
taken to remedy the situation the
town is bound to suffer.
