FAMOUS ENGINE JUNKED.
No. 999 of New York Central Kan
Mile in Thirty-Two Seconds.
Engine No. 999, once the crack
locomotive of the New York Central
lines, has found its way to the railroad
burying ground at Depew, X. Y.,
where it will soon be reduced to junk,
Rays the New York Sun. It was this
engine which established the world's
record for the New York Central
when in May, IS93, the Empire State
Express covered one mile in thirtytwo
second. This was at the rate of
122.5 miles an hour.
The burying ground at Depew is
chocked with the rusting remains of
many an engineer's pride. There are
row on row of boilers, enormous driv;?
cnnd domes and smoke
IIIg ?
stacks, all to fall at last beneath the
hammer of the junk man.
Discussing the ultimate fate of engines,
a New York Central foreman
said:
"Yes, that 900 class (railroad men)
speak of engines by their numerical I
classification) is about all in. En-j
gines built as late as 1904 are being,
scrapped. The old type of locomo-j
tive is too expensive. You very sel-!
dom see one now which was built
prior to 1900. The reason for this is
that the cost of upkeep is too great.
"When a locomotive has outgrown
its usefulness and is not economical
to rebuild it, it is turned over to the
stripping gang. A modern engine of
the 12-wheel type with a crew of six
men can take care of a train of eighty
cars, while it would necessitate
the use of five S-wheel locomotives of
an older type with thirty men, or
, eight 6-wheel engines with fortyeight
men to pull a similar load. Especially
at this time, when railroad
men are so scarce, it is more feasible
to use one modern engine than several
older types.

"The oiaer aic
general traffic work because of their
small horsepower and. short wheel
bases. At a high rate of speed they
become unsteady and pitch like a
tug boat in a heavy sea. If they cannot
be utilized as switch engines or
for short hauls in passenger service
with a small number of coaches, they
are marked for the junk man."
U. D. C. Meeting.
The regular monthly meeting of
the Francis Marion Bamberg chapter
of the U. D. C. was held on the afternoon
of October 12 at the home of
Mrs. Jones Williams. The meeting
was called to order by the president
and roll call responded to by twenty
members. The meeting was strictly
business. However, Mrs. H. N. Folk,
with her usual graciousness, relieved
the tedium with a vocal solo.
The first consideration -was the
election of delegates to the national
convention which meets this year in
Asheville. They were: Mrs. J. C.
Lewis, Mrs. John H. Cope, and Mrs.
G. Frank Bamberg. Then delegates
to the state convention at Greenville
"were appointed as follows: Mrs. J.
\ C. Lewis, Mrs. A. Rice and Mrs. J.
A. Wyman. Alter tnis a lormai application
was read from George Bamberg
for the scholarship to Carlisle
school. It was unanimously decided
. to give this to George, who is a grand
son of Captain George Bamberg.
At the conclusion of the business
meeting the election of officers was
held. As it has been a law in our
chapter that no officer shall serve
longer than two years, it was decided
unanimously to amend the constitution
and make it legal for an officer
to serve as long as agreeable to all
parties. This amendment was made
in order that we might retain Mrs.
J. C. Lewis as our president, she
having served the chapter for the
past two years most faithfully and
well. The other officers elected are
as follows: First vice president, Mrs.
J. R. Owens; second vice president,
Mrs. G. W. Cope; recording secretary,
Mrs. Frank Bamberg; corresponding
secretary, Mrs. Ben Black;
treasurer, Mrs. E. H. Henderson; historian,
Mrs. N. P. Smoak; registrar,
Mrs. R. C. Jones; soloist, Mrs. H. N.
Folk.
After this the hostess charmingly
served tea and sandwiches. ? Contributed.
