A week or two ago a man was giv- '
en a new trial in Orangeburg because
the trial judge was related in the ,
sixth degree to the mother of the man
killed by the defendant. Such silly
technicalities of the law make one
feel sometimes that the courts of
South Carolina might be improved on, '
especially when it is noted that the .
judge was unaware of the remote re- ,

and could not, even if he had chose
to do so, have been influenced by the
relationship.
How any sensible man could figure
out that the burning of cotton gins
will help in the present cotton crisis
is difficult to understand. This is on
a parity with J:he movement some
years ago to burn cotton rather than
sell it at less than production prices,
or to get rid of it so that it could not
be said to be in existence. Such steps
are wilful and criminal and any person
guilty of such should be given
the limit of the law. These acts can
not be even placed in the class of
over zealous desire to help the situation.
Ginneries are private property;
they have the perfect right to
operate, and it is their duty to operate.
If necessary the government
ought to protect them by any means
within its power.
? ^ i?? ?
It appears to us that the decline in
prices is about as difficult a situation
as the rise in prices. Either way you

equalized, there is no objection to
high prices. In fact we rather incline
to the belief that the average person
can get along better with high prices
than low prices. This is evidenced
by the tact that at the present time
there is $39,000,000 more on deposit
in the banks of South Carolina than
there was a year ago. That a person
can save money even with the high
cost of living prevailing is shown by
the fact that of the thirty-nine millions
above referred to twenty-five
millions are in savings acocunts. This
state leads the entire south in increase
of bank deposits per capita.
There can be no real hard times as
long as there is so much money in the
state.

FAIRFAX NEWS NOTES.
Council Will Hold Community Meeting?PuPils
Make Contribution.
Fairfax, Oct. 10.?The new council
has called a meeting for Thursday
-night, Oct. 14, at which time important
business will be on the programme
of the evening. Immediately
after this session visitors and all
will be served with oysters and other
' suitable eats. Fairfax citizens are
looking to the future. Her folks are
all public spirited and it is predicted
that this "get together meet* will re- =
suit in far greater avchievements for
the little oitv.
The pupils of the Fairfax school
have agreed to make a very liberal
contribution toward purchasing an oil
portrait of Gen. Wade Hampton for
the R. E. Lee camp of Confederate
veterans, Richmond, Va. This appeal
came from a prominent South Carolinian,
who had visited the above
camp, and much to his surprise found
only a small steel engraving of our
southern hero.
Miss Sadie Harter, the accomplished
musical directress of the Olar centralized
high school, was at home to
spend last week-end.
Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Young were
visitors in Augusta and Trenton the
past week.
Friday afternoon, the lower school
society offered a very interesting programme.
Among some of the more
interesting and helpful numbers,
were:
were: Song by society; reading, Lavinia
Hughes; recitation, Mary Alice
Youmans; music, Frances Loadholt;
story, Annie Lee Roberts; local
