VICTORY IS LIKELY
ALL ALONG LINE
DEMOCRATS DRIVING FOR ROTH
HOUSES.
v
Strong Lead to Cox.
Slight Republican Majority in The
Senate May Be Overturned
With Ease.
^ Just now one of the most interesting
topics in national political affairs
is not only the question of whether
Harding or Cox will win the
presidential election, but also as to
the final outcome for the house and
senate.

i that the senate will return to
I the Democratic fold than there has
been since it went into Republican
hands two years ago.
No one knows how the presidency
is coming out and if there he a prophet
willing to take a guess at the
result he is not seen hereabouts, although,
to tell the truth, from a
strictly non-partisan standpoint, the
odds strongly favor Cox.
However much the Republican
spell binders, spielers and others are
going about the land decrying the
Democrats and boosting their own
candidate, they lose sight of the fact
that from his record, and it is the
record of any man that tells the story
of his life, Harding is the weakest
man the Republicans have put up in
the last 50 years, or since there was
a Republican party, for that matter.
What Record Tells.
Those interested in strictly sticking
to the official records will be inlightened
if they will see what Harding's
stand was on national prohibition,
prohibition as a war measure,
preparedness for war, the sale of libf
erty bonds and kindred matters. Further,
it should 'be remembered that
some decidedly interesting reading
may be found regarding the bravery
Amprinnn soldiers at the very

moment when they were going to war
if Harding's record is scanned. Indications
are that so far as the senate
is concerned, that body may and very
likely will 'swing back into the Democratic
column. There are many reasons
to support this assertion.
It should be remembered that at
this time the Republican majority in
the senate is of the slimmest kind,
only two more Republicans than there
are Democrats. Therefore, almost any
kind of change, for instance, if Sen.
ator Smoot of Utah should be defeated,
and there are reasons to be believed
he will be, and Watson of Indiana
should also go into the discard,
that would only leave one more
change from the Republican to the
Democratic column to put the matter
over. Seriously, there are evidences
that there will be four or five such
changes this year.
Senator Wadsworth of New York is
another Republican slated to hit the
toboggan. He has taken a stand
against suffrage whuch has caused
him to make many enemies in his
state. Mrs.v Wadsworth is one of the
most pronounced anti-suffrage women
in the entire country, and naturally,
the New York senator and Mrs.
waaswortn nave mougnt ana actea
alike on this matter. That Wadsworth
is scheduled to go this year,
along with others from the G. O. P.
line-up, is no secret here. In fact,
it seems to he the opinion of the senator
himself that he is to have his
official head chopped off.
Reports from the East are also that
there are still other changes to come
about which, figuring accurately,
should permit the Democrats to overcome
the present lead of two which
the Republicans have on them and
possibly pick one or two other seats.
The house situation permits of the
belief that not only will the present
Republican majority be overcome, but
that it will be entirely wiped out.
Why?
Republic3!^ Divided.
Any one who has kept track of legislative
affairs in the house since the
Republicans secured control can not

badly split. Take the situation, for
example, when the soldier bonus bill
was up for consideration. "Jim"
Mann of Illinois, one of the real old
timers in the G. 0. P. line-up but a
man who will not always do what his
party wants him to do "when he knows
it is wrong, broke completely out of
the reservation and said that the rule
which the Republicans were attempting
to pass in order to get the bonus
bill through, not giving the Democrats
their rights in the matter, was
"outrageous." He protested against
this form of "gag" rule and it was
not the first time he has done so.
Almost every day, under the Mondell
leadership, it is necessary for
this leader to send for Mr. Mann to
help him out of a bad parliamentary
situation. The present Republican
house is further from being a solid
body than it has been since the time
when "Uncle Joe" Cannon was lifted
from the speaker's chair because the
house rose in mutiny at his arbitrary
and autocratic management. Before
that time there was solid harmony,
but the Republicans have never been
exactly the same since.
All the big tales that the Republican
candidates are telling concerning
their wonderful achievements are being
discounted by the voters. You
might fool them once, but not now.
It looks like a Democrat's victory all
along the line.?P. H. McGowan, in
Washington disDatch.
