HA BY CUTS GOLD TOOTH. The Doctors Declare \tlanta Baby j Has Priceless Molar. Eva Catherine Lee's " gold tooth" bids fair to upset long-established scientific theories and furnish means for pathological discussions that may develop factions in medical circles throughout the country and establish her standing as the world's latest and greatest wonder, says the Georgian American. Already three doctors have seen and declared the glistening molar in the upper left jaw of the 7-months-old child of Mrs. Xora Lee, at 117 Oc? ' -l 1 ,1 muigee street, to oe 501a. oc?ci?i others have branded the claims of these three as impossible. But the striking fact stands forth that only one of the scoffers lias examined the tooth, and he is not a dentist. Interest in Eva Catnerin's tooth heightened Saturday when Dr. Marion S. Tribble, D. M. D., professor of dental histrology at the Atlanta Southern Dental College, made an expert examination of the molar and immediately pronounced it to be gold. Dr. Tribble, who is one of the leading women experts in dental science in the south, made her test with the aid of magnifiers and scientifis appliances. Declares Tooth is Gold. "The tooth is positively gold!'" she exclaimed immediately after she had made her first preliminary examination. A second test caused her to reitery ate her statement. "There is absolutely 110 doubt in my mind but this tooth contains gold," the said. "The great question now is to determine how it came to contain gold. The child is too nervous and fretful for me to use dental explorers at this'time, so I can not determine if the gold is a part of the tooth's composition or merely particles of the metal stuck to the surface. She then questioned the child's mother as to whether or not she had been allowed to bite while teething on any gold article, such as a ring or bracelet. No such incident could be recalled by Mrs. Lee. "The tooth is not a normal molar, and appears to be without a normal formation," continued Dr. Tribble. "I intend to see the child again in a few days, as soon as it has recovered from the nervous shock of having its mouth opened so often for persons to gaze on its contents, to ascertain if the tooth has a normal surface of enamel or is a chalky structure of soft dentine found sc often in badly ' developed teeth. Then I can sa> positively whether or not the gold grew there or stuck just after it, cut 1 1 through the gum by the child biting 1 some gold object. . ^ *' Suggestions Absurd. "Statements that the child may ? Tiave developed this gold tooth by j '-swallowing some gold object when j very young is aosura. Any iure gu substance of metal swallowed in that ; way would pass out through the j bowels in a normal way, and intact. , The human body is not a machine to j manufacture metals into useful or ? artistic objects. j "It would also have been Impos- j sible for the tooth to have come as a 1 result of the mother swallowing a ( particle of pold during pregnancy when she had dental work done. The ^ body of the mother would no more 1 be able to direct the metal into the ( developing form of an infant than j tthe body of the infant itself. , Dr. N. 0. Tribble, M. D.. husband of the dentist and himself professor of bacteriology at the Atlanta Southern Dental College, was also present and, while he did not make a close examination of Eva Catherine's mouth, he vouscliafed the ipnion , that no emotional strain had ever been known by niedical science to have resulted in such a development -- - TT _ 1 as a birthmark in a child, ne aisu said any admission of metallic particles intc the mother during, or before preg- ncy or to the body of the infant, resulting in a similar development, was likewise unknown. The first declaration that the tooth contains gold was made by Dr. J. O. Brantley, who examined it with a magnifying glass and with his fingers and advanced the theory that prenatal influence was the only plausible solution he could offer. The second claim was made by Dr. S. F. West, who examined it after Dr. Brantley. Sure It Is Gold. "I am sure it is gold," both of these diagnosticians said. "It is about an eighth of an inch in diameter and the gold is spread over a portion of its surface similar to an inlaid filling," continued Dr. Brantley. "It is a discoloration of the enamel or of the dentine shining through the enamel," said Dr. R. L. Hood, a practicing physician who was the first to examine the tooth. Although the tooth only broke its way through Eva Catherine's gums last Thursday morning, Dr. Thomas t WOMEN NEED NOT SERVE. Attorney Ocneral Says Constitution Calls for 12 Men on Jury. 1 Columbia. Sept. ?Sam H. Wolfe, attorney general, this afternoon handed down an opinion in which he holds that women of South Carolina are not available for petit jury duty in the circuit courts. Mr. Wolfe points out that "sectfon 22, article ">, of the Constitution prescribes that the petit jury of the Circuit court shall consist of twelve men." Mr. Wolfe also explains that the ratification of the nineteenth, amendment does not affect this. The opinion, was given to J. L. Perrin, clerk of court in Abbeville county. In writing to Mr. Wolfe, the Ah beville county officer explained that as jury lists are made in December from books of registration it is important that this question be determined. What is home without an Edison? Under our easy payment plan, you can own a machine and never know the difference. W. H. CHANDLER. W. Brock, dentist, who has not seen the molar, said Saturday that in his opinion the enamel had worn off and the dentine had assumed a golden appearance as a result of some acid condition of the child's stomach. Dr. Brock based his opinion on the report of a well-known surgeon who saw the tooth and reported to him, but who wanted his name withheld. While different physicians advance different theories as to the cause of the tooth's containing gold or being discolored to resemble the precious metal, no one has offered any explanation as to whether any particular act or shock received by the mother during pregnancy could have resulted in such an unique birthmark on her ! child. Mrs. Lee admitted that she had two gold crowns adjusted in her own mouth two and a half months before Eva Catherine was born. Several of the doctors have taken the position that this was too late to cause a prenatal development in the child, Dr. Hood was most emphatic in his declaration that such a result would nave oeen lmpcssioie. Ot,hers attributing the phenomenon to a prenatal act fail to go further than to say that it is only possible or plausible solution they can offer. Open Minded as to Cause. The three doctors who have pronounced the tooth to contain gold are 9 % still with open minds as to the cause. All of them contend nothing in medical or dental history has ever recorded a similar occurence and none of them will deny that sometinfe and somewhere, or maybe even now all former medical precedent is to be upset by the unusual caper of a blue3yed girl baby, who does not understand why so many serious looking people insist on peering into her pret:y mouth. On the advice of Dr. N. 0. Tribble, Mrs. Lee Saturday stopped exhibiting Eva Catherine's tooth to callers, ' who began to increase after publica- g :ion of her strange possession Friday, rhe child appeared nervous and worn * from the ordeal of having her mouth J pried open so often. Her mother, 1 likewise was wearied by the continuous stream of visitors. j "We have never had very much ?old in our lives, but this is a case of ! too much gold," she said to the first * i caller refused the privilege of seeing j he molar. "Eva Catherine might well \ wish she had no tooth at all rather = than to have the first piece of real gold cause her so much trouble and bother." ^ Just rpppi.vpri shinmpnt nf Ampri can Wire Fence.
