No. 35 Thursday, September 2,1920 TYPHOID CONTROLLABLE. In an address delivered before the American Medical association at New] - - I Orleans last April, Dr. L. A. Kiser, | director of county health work of the state board of health, gives some inaeresting statistics on the control of typhoid fever in Orengeburg county and counties adjacent to Orangeburg. Orangeburg county has had a county health department for the pas: three years, while none of the surrounding counties has maintained such a'department. The state bureau of vital statistics " has been in existence only since 1915 and consequently no statistics are available previous to that time on typhoid deaths. For the years 19171919, the following statistics are given on the prevalence of typhoid fever: Orangeburg county?40 per cent, decrease. Dirchester county?20 per cent, decrease. ^ "" - '? ? r% ?? ck _ j. tfamDerg couniy?id i-z per cent, decrease. Barnwell county? No change. Aiken county?25 per cent, increase. Clarendon county?116.6 per cent, increase. The department of health in Orangeburg county consists of a physician and various assistants, and their service consists of lectures, visiting homes, making medical and health inspections and recommendations, and other work of an educational nature.^ Figures are also given for Darlington county ,which maintains a health department, and the surrounding counties, which do not: Darlington county?57.9 per cent, decrease. Florence county?5.9 per cent, increase. ^ Chesterfield county?33.3 per cent, increase. Marlboro county?50 per cent, increase. The value of county health units is Quite apparent. As to the method of maintaining these county health unsit, we have not the information at hand., but we think the matter of sufficient importance for the legislative delegation and the county authorities to investigate. Nothing within the range of reason should be left undone to improve the health of the county. SHOT AS HE LEAVES CHURCH. Mother and Sister Witness Killing of Police Inspector. Belfast, Ireland, Aug. 22.?Police Inspector Swanzy, against whom a verdict of wilful murder was given by a coroner's jury in connection with the assassination of Mayor McCurtain in March, was shot dead today while proceeding to his home from church at Lisburn, to which town he had been transferred after the finding of the coroner's jury. The killing of Inspector Swanzy was among the most daring of a long series. The congregations were leaving all the Protestant churches at the time and converging on the scene of the shooting.
