UNLAWFUL FOR CHILDREN.
Boys and Girls Under T\velve May
Not Operate Automobiles.
It is now unlawful for children
under 12 years of age to operate on
i the public roads of South Carolina
motor driven vehicles. At the 1920
session of the general assembly an act
to this effect, the provisions of which
follow, was passed and approved by
the governor on March 10:
"That it shall be unlawful for any
minor under the age of 12 years to
drive or operate any automobile or
other motor vehicle upon the public
highways of the state, whether the
same be with the consent of their pa
rents or guardians or not.
"That any person or persons allowing
or consenting to a minor under
12 .years driving or operating his or
their car against the provisions of
section 1 of this act shall be guilty of
a misdemeanor and, upon conviction
thereof, shall be fined in a sum not
exceeding $100 or be imprisoned upon
the county chaingang for a, period not
exceeding 30 days.
" That any minor under the age of
12 years who violates the provisions
of section 2 of this act shall be guilty
of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction
thereof shall be liable to the
same penalty as provided in section 3
of this act."
DIES FROM BROKEN NECK.
Electric Shock Causes Fall From Ladder
in Greenville.
i i'
Greenville, Aug. 25.?A fall resulting
from an electric shock caused the
instant death of Claude W. Tiller,
aged 30, at Poinsett mill early this
morning.
A coroner's jury in the afternoon
returned a verdict to the effect that
the electrician came to his death by
accident.
Mr. Tiller was engaged in drilling
a hole near the ceiling in the spinning
room with an electric breast drill
while standing on a step ladder. In
taking hold of a pipe with one hand
and the drill with the other hand a
current passed through his body. It
was of such strength that he was unable
to free his hold from the drill
and pipe. He called for help and a
coworker in the plant ran to his assistance
and succeeded in breaking
the wire connection. When the current
was broken- and the electrician
had been freed from his perilous position,
he was unable to gain his equilibrium
on the ladder, and he plunged
headforemost to the floor, his neck
being broken in the fall. Life was extinct
when aid reached him. Dr. C.
P. Fair said that a broken neck was
the cause of death.

WOMEN APPOINTED.
First Effects of Suffice Amendment
Felt in State.
/ -
First effects of the promulgation of
the 19th amendment were felt in
South Carolina yesterday when Governor
Cooper commissioned as notaries
public five women of South
Carolina.
It is true that the bells have rung
and the women held hurrah meetings
and jubilation gatherings, but it was
not until Governor Cooper issued
these commissions that the effects of
the amendment were actually felt in
the state.
The commissions were issued to
, Nell Pressly Detreville, Ruth Simmons
Sawyer and Minna Layton Holman,
all of Columbia; Margie Viola
Thomason, of Newberry, and Ola C.
Crane, of Spartanburg.
Numerous applications for commissions
as notaries public have been'
made in the days before the meeting
of the Tennessee legislature, but as
the women were not electors they
could not qualify.
Miss Detreville was the first woman
to make application for a commission
as notary public after Tennessee
had taken action on the amendment,
and very properly her name
is in the first of those to whom commissions
were issued?The State.

Quite Clear.
Tommie lost his temper while playing
with neighbor Johnnie and told
him plainly that he considered him a
person totally devoid of intelligence
and predestined to a hereafter quite
lacking in attractiveness, or words to
that effect. This was too bad, as
Tommie's mother happened to be in
hearing, and subsequent proceedings
were too painful to relate. Next day
the boys were again playing together,
and again Tommie lost his temper.
"You certainly are?" he began
wrathfully, but memory lent caution
to his tongue and he concluded frocefully,
"just the same kind of a fellow
you were yesterday."

A FAMILY
MEDICINE
In Her Mother's Home, Says This
Georgia Lady, Regarding BlackDraught
Relief From Headache,
Malaria, Chills, Etc.
Ringgold, Ga.? Mrs. Chas. Gaston,
of this place, writes: "I am a user
of Thedford's Black-Draught; In fact,
It was one of our family medicines.
Also in my mother's home, when I
was a child. When any of us children
complained of headache, usually
caused by constipation, she gave us
a dose of Black-Draught, which would
rectify the trouble. Often in the
Spring, we would have malaria and
chills, or troubles of this kind, we
would take Black-Draught pretty regular
until the liver acted well, and
we would soon be up and around
again. We would not be without it,
for it certainly has saved us lots of
doctor bills. Just a dose of BlackDraught
when not so well saves a
lot of days in bed."
Thedford's Black-Draught has been
in use for many years in the treatment
of stomach, liver and bowel
troubles, and the popularity which it
now enjoys Is proof of Its merit
If your liver is not doing its duty,
you will suffer from such disagreeable
symptoms as headache^ biliousness,
constipation, indigestion, etc.,
and unless something is done, serious
trouble may result
Thedford's Black-Draught has been
found a valuable remedy for these
troubles. It is purely vegetable, and
acts in a prompt and natural way,
regulating the liver to its proper
functions and cleansing the bowels of
impurities. Try it. Insist on Thed*
