\ STATE NEAR TOP.
South Carolina Sixth in Railway
Trackage.
South Carolina ranks sixth in the
list of states in the number of miles
of railway tracks built from 1010 to
, 1920, according to statistics just <
made available through the bureau '
of railway economics. The Palmetto
state has a percentage of 10 with
611 miles of new trackage. Included
in these figures are main lines, spurs
and side tracks.
Wyoming takes first place with a
percentage increase from 1910 of
31.5 and 461 actual miles. Oregon is
second, Idaho is third, Montana
* fourth, Kentucky fifth, South Carolina
and North Dakota being tied for
the sixth place. j
% Vermont takes the last stand with
a percentage increase of .4, having
an actual mileage advance in ten
years of four miles.
Game at Springfield a Farce.
In a onesided farcial nightmare
5' previously advertised as a ball game
the Springfield baseball team had a
great track day last Thursday over
there, and ran until their tongues
hung out, toying with some wrouldbe
ball players supposed to be representing
the Bamberg club. Instead
of saving some of their energy
for the next day when they sorely
needed it the Springfield lads ran
right on evidently tiring themselves
out and came out with 13 tallies to
3 for the aforesaid crowd said to be
representing Bamberg, but who at
times appeared to be playing for
Springfield. The game was not to
/t
count but was merely an exhibition,
not an exhibition of baseball playing,
but rather an exhibition of how a !
, few Bamberg fans could humor a
y good joke while Springfield looked
on in disgust, and be it said that
they were altogether justified in do-*
v ing so. It was just a case where
Bamberg had promised to return
them this game and at the last minute
it was learned that a number of
our boys could not go, so rather
than disappoint them a patched up
team had to be taken ov?r. But the
Springfield people were also disgusted
the next day in Bamberg for another
reason*. The score' of that game
tells the tale.
Bamberg's two most valuable men
out of the line-up Thursday were
Captain Charlie Rentz at second and .
our star catcher, "Bub" Cooner.
Practically every position on the
team save short stop and third
base was handled at various times <
/ by as many as three different men,
v, and if anybody desired a box score ,
of the so-called game the same wrould ]
be well nigh impossible to formulate. <
The Springfield players enjoyed J
some good practice and laughed it j
off good naturedly as good sports j
I letting Bamberg put men in and out :
of the game whenever they pleased '

it, and finally the climax to the ;

1 ^ several Bamberg boys batted out of '
their times at bat and actually (
[ scored a run. Pollock, pitching for 1
I Springfield, didn't seem to have so '
much stuff on the ball, but if somebody
had run a Ford across the base
that day our bunch couldn't have hit
it, so he got away nicely until the
8th round when Otto Large drove
one at him that went like a German
y
* "Whiz Bang" and injured his hand
so that he wras forced to retire. The
injury was regretted and it is hoped
that Pollock will be back in the
game shortly. Captain Boland then
came in from second base and took
up the burden of heaving them for
V* ' his home team. Purcell, of Ehrhardt,
Weeks and McGhee Bamberg
lobbed them over for Bamberg. Score
