J. FKAMv HAXLKV KILLFl). Two Companions Also Victims of Collision of Train and Auto. Dennison, Ohio, Aug. 1.?J. Frank Hanley, former governor of Indiana and candidate for president on the prohibition ticket in 1916, and Dr. and Mrs. Baker, of Kilgore, Oiiio, were killed six mile's from here early today when a Pennsylvania freight train struck the automobile in which the party were driving to Kilgore. All three suffered fractured skulls and crushed bodies and neither recovered consciousness after being brought to a local hospital. Mr. Hanley died at 9 a. m., Mrs. Baker at 11:30 and her husband at 5:30. Dr. and Mrs. Baker had met Mr. Hanley at Dennison this morning and were driving him to their home in Kilgore 20 miles from here. The automobile drove across the tracks of one freight train and directly in front of another. The automobile was struck squarely AIr. Hanlev was en route to Carrollton, where he was to have delivered an address tomorrow. He had intended to spend one day with the Bakers at their home. - ^ < > WILL NOT RECEIVE YOUMAXS. Allendale Man Sings Hyms in Wolfe's Office. Columbia, July 30.?Dick Youmans, who, it is alleged, shot his brother-in-law, John Dunbar, to death on the streets of Allendale about a month ago, was brought to Columbia today by Sheriff L. C. Bennett, of Allendale county, in an effort to have him confined in the state penitentiary or the state hospital for the insane for purposes of observation. The state hospital authorities ~~1 ^ +oi-^ tho man unless bv a UUU1U iiUL l ui\ v v.uv ? r special order of the court and the state prison superintendent, Col. A. K. Sanders, refused him admission unless by an order of the governor, who is now on his summer vacation. As there was no circuit judge available, the prisoner had to be taken back to Allendale this afternoon. Sheriff Bennett said that Youmans, who is a slender man of fifty-two years, began to act irrationally about a week ago, it is said. While his actions are those of a demented man, he is not dangerous, claimed the sheriff. When in Columbia, the man was brought into the office of the attor- ney general who was attempting to unravel tlie legal tangle, and while there Youmans sang hymns one minute and emitted throaty, 'gutteral sounds, lige the growling -of an animal, the next. He was in constant vocal action. As it was impossible to get the man bail and as none of the physicians of Allendale was inclined to pass on the man's mental condition, because of the serious charge under which he is resting, Sheriff Bennett decided that he would bring him to Columbia in an effort to have him under expert examination. It is probable that an order will be secured from a circuit judge shortly to have the man placed , in the state hospital for the insane prior to his trial. SEEKS UNIDENTIFIED MAX. | Criminal Assault Attempted in City of Greenwood. Greenwood, July 29.?An unidentified man, supposed to have been a negro, attempted criminal assault on a prominent white woman in the southern part of town near Greenwood this afternoon about 3 o'clock. The attempted assault occurred in an outhouse in the back yard of the victim. When she ran .out of the building after having eluded the assailant, she was met by an unidentified white man, who claims he saw a negro run out of the yard and across the field in front of the house. He immediately undertook pursuit of the negro, but had not been seer at a late hour this afternoon. The woman, it is said, thinks that her assailant was a negro wearing blue overalls, blue shirt and cap at the time of the deed. A negro answering that description was captured auout 6 o'clock this afternoon and placed in the county jail. A large crowd is scouring the country in search of the guilty man, but officers say they do not anticipate any violence. NOTICE TO DEMOCRATS.
